Looks like this was the actual pet shop where the boys friends worked and to later take the name for the band.

What if the boys had got distracted and bought a hamster rather than thinking of band names?

What would they be called instead?

I personally think the "hamster" thing is a myth.
Chris Morris makes reference to it in his Pet Shop Boys - Christmas Song - Parody.

^^Actually I wasn't hinting towards that at all, I think that myth is a childish thing created by the ''right on'' rock orientated magazines like NME & Melody Maker in the 90s

PSB have always been given an hard time in the "real" music press, they've never really been cool or followed a trend and I think that's their strength.
I can remember Chris explaining where the name came from on Soul Train circa 1986 (ish)

Regardless how they got their name, I seem to remember something about some rumours about actor Richard Gere being gay or bi were making the rounds, and an added shocker was that Gere enjoyed the apparent practice of placing live hampsters on condoms and shoving them up... well... you know where. And since the PSB were at the peak of the fame, some of the press were calling Gere a "Pet Shop Boy", more of a play on words. So I don't think the joke/smear was initially against the PSB, rather at Richard Gere. But after the "Gere Smear", the associations with the PSB stuck. And that's all I know.

However, the practice if it ever commonly existed, has probably benefited the PSB today, since it gives the name a slightly nasty undertone and thus kind of gets a risqué cool factor in 2016.

According to Neil, they've been asked about it ever since West End Girls.

Who knows how far back the rumor actually goes. Perhaps Tom Watkins will enlighten us in his autobiography.

The Richard Gere story involved a gerbil, not a hamster. :)

I don't even believe that unspeakable act even exists

Tom Watkins was an asshole, always coming across as a bitter, betrayed, glory hunting delusionist, an ungrateful old queen, like it was him who wrote and performed all the songs
