Is it different? I need to listen again. It seems a little punchier, but can;t place why

The difference is quite subtle I think?

I couldn't notice a difference. Maybe just radio compression?? I noticed many nuances to older tracks played in the recent Radio 2 documentaries.

They've completely excised the opening verse which sets the scene for the song, hints at the dichotomy between expectations and reality, and matter-of-factly directs the protagonist to the queue.

Predictably disappointing.

I'm sorry, I've really tried to like this song but it does absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. One of the weakest tracks on the album, it utterly passes me by. I know it's a little unfair but whilst listening to this track I kept thinking to myself: 'Is this really the same band that made Being Boring, Devices, Flamboyant, Way It Used To Be..? (Super overall is pretty good, though..!) Oh well, I look forward to the B sides..

To be fair I don't see how they could've made a better radio edit. The album version is perfection and any cuts would have made it inferior to the album version.

Which is sort of my point. It is too long, apparently, for radio play in its original form. Any edit is going to be a disappointment, in comparison.

It is what it is: an inferior marketing tool.

Given that there were other tracks on Super that wouldn't have needed such crude mutilation for radio purposes, I think this is a poor choice of single in aesthetic terms. It offers nothing to the fan. I miss the days when post-album singles were often radically remixed for radio play. Over the last 15 years, the trend seems to be to bring out the machete instead.

This single edit starts with my least favourite verse. I think they should have started with the first verse from the album version, and cut the second verse. The 'in the mix' verse adds least to the narrative of the song in my opinion, but here it is given pride of place as the opening verse of a PSB single.

I agree. The "in the mix" and "ironic twist" bits are superfluous, slightly hackneyed elements. I'm sure they kept that verse in because the "start up" reference is quite good, but the tone of the record is changed by the omission of the first verse, in my view. That opening verse is quite stark, contrasting the hopes of youth with the harsh realities of "joining the queue" waiting for the dole. Instead, they've gone for the more naff hipster verse making it harder to empathise with the protagonist.

Actually, we need to stop thinking about these edits as single edits. They are radio edits, and intended solely for that purpose. The single IS the album version.

Aside from the opinions about the edits, the main thing that interests me is the new musical material: synth lines and choirs. Any opinions about these? Because it's quite likely they will be in the extended mix.

Radio edits are so arbitrary. Does shaving 30 seconds off the song really benefit the song and all others being played on the radio before and after?

I get along radio edit is not that much shorter than the album version of Twenty-something. The radio edit of Being boring is a great example of cutting down the song without butchering the lyrics, and it's as long as The dictator decides. PSB who is in charge of your x2 era quality control?
