Guardian 100 Greatest UK No.1's
Re: Guardian 100 Greatest UK No.1's
Great for the Boys but no Depeche, Cure or New Order but this is included:
20
Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe (2012)
On first listen, the song seemed deceptively featherweight. The strings sound like ringtones; the guitar parts as though they were lifted from a PlayStation 2 game. But even the most synthetic production can’t detract from songwriting this ironclad. It is telling that Call Me Maybe was intended as a folk song; it would be catchy played on a kazoo, or underwater

Slightly difficult for DM and The Cure, as they've never had a UK number one.
Still waiting to hear the Adam Freeland, Manhattan Clique and Axwell mixes of Integral.

Thought I'd double check about The Cure on www.officialcharts.com and also looked up New Order just to see how long World in Motion was number 1 for, apparently the artist name was actually englandneworder

That's very surprising, but not at the same time. Would have thought that at their peaks, both of them would have had a no 1 hit.

Wow! Even lower than OMD's peak (#3). Surprising!

Surprised that Personal Jesus only got to number 13.

This is a comment on the Guardian’s deputy Music Editor’s tweet. Nick Stewart signed U2 to Island Records

They’ll have to console themselves with having made shitloads more money than Neil and Chris thanks to their success in the U.S.

they've never charted well in the US either.TallThinMan wrote: ↑Fri 05 Jun 2020, 7:23 pmThey’ll have to console themselves with having made sh*tloads more money than Neil and Chris thanks to their success in the U.S.
however, their album sales are good, and touring brings in a lot.

I'm stunned that Depeche Mode never had a #1 single in the UK - I'd have put cold hard cash down on that.
Just goes to show that chart positions counted for very little even back in the 80's.

They have never really been popular in the U.K

About, Call Me Maybe, I think it is one of the greatest pop songs of the last 20 years. Great melodies, awesome lyrics, a pop-masterpiece!

Couldnt have said it better, It has the same effect and i get the same feelings, even after all these years.dbaseboy wrote: ↑Fri 05 Jun 2020, 10:57 am Get in! Never doubted it’d be number one - honest lol. But, fantastic. That haunting, euphoric, atmospheric opening never fails to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and takes me back very clearly to when I first heard it. Powerful, intelligent and enigmatic. Deserves to be number one!
