Erasure are at #4... in spirit.

I'd rather Erasure not hit the top ten at all with a song like "The Loving Kind."

It was released a week too late for an Erasure-esque stab at the top ten anyway.

What with the new download rules, is it even possible for bands to calculate high chart positions with release dates any more?

I was just about to post the same thing. The tactical Drunk and Breathe-esque January releases are now a thing of the past because download sales aren't affected by the post-Christmas lull. The Loving Kind sold nearly 20,000 units to chart at #10, a figure that would have earned a top 3 placing only a couple of years ago in the same week.

On the other hand, album sales, the vast majority of which are still CDs, are tiny and still suffering the traditional January hangover.

Unbelieavable really. 20k to scrape into the top ten has been unheard of for at least a decade. 20,000 units sold for a 2nd single off an album thats sold over half a million already, is fantastic. Especially as it's their 4th (i think) studio album.

This is why chart positions aren't worth commenting on anymore. It's sales that count.

Actually it's quality that really counts....

It was touch and go throughout last week as midweek figures put the single at Number 10 and fans were so terrified that a break in the run of Top 10s would spell the end of Girls Aloud that they took to desperate multibuying. The picture above is from a Girls Aloud fan forum.

Here, meanwhile, is what a Popjustice forum member did for the cause.

"My (honest) contribution has been:
2 x The Loving Kind single (1 pre-ordered, 1 ordered yesterday)

2 x single bundles (1 itunes, 1 7digital)
1 x Vinyl
1 x Single version
I cannot do anymore, i only lost my job a week ago!"

...The fan whose multiple copies of 'The Loving Kind' are pictured above has basically paid £61.38 for Girls Aloud to go on holday.
