your rate of very seems really better than the one of yes, but i think one in a million is the weakest track on very, being too simple in his melody, though being up tempo.

I wonder if the melody on yes are as good as the one we can find on fundamental, and if the sounds are futuristic as was very at the time ?

Well, Yes is certainly the most contemporary sounding and upbeat PSB opus since Very, and they've eschewed a fair bit of the lush landscapes of Fundy for a more up to date direction, but I don't think futuristic (in the manner of Can you forgive her? or ADPOV, say) is so appropriate here, more of its time with nods to the Pet's past, particularly the 90s albums. I love One In A Million, but if you find the melody too simple then perhaps you'll rate some of the uptempo tracks on Yes - virtually all the tracks are certainly more complex than OIAM, but there's more of a clubby disco production a' la Nightlife than the megapop of Very.

FWIW, I rate Very so highly because it was, for me, the last truly stunning album from a period where my PSB fandom was at its highest - 1990 - 1993.

I'm really surprised to hear that there are some badly misjudged & naff lyrics... are these excusable in any way in the context of each song? I mean, if you'd told me the 'considered tacky.... Issey Miyake' lyric before I'd hear Flamboyant, I'd have thought that was naff, but in the context of the song it acts as a kind of summing up of the pretensions that song is about.

Are the lines that have made you cringe on Yes excusable in a similar way?

Or are they fat-lecherous-dad-tries-joke-to-impress-teenage-daughter's-friends cringeworthy?

PJ said there were some 'Finland Station' moments on Yes, but that the lyrics were generally clever without being pretentious....

Legacy is pretentious in every overblown sense, though I just know that some of the Carphone cad lyrics will be dismissed by Neil as one of their "funny, silly" moments like the U2 cover or Ab Fab. Nuff said. Thing is, the Flamboyant couplet was funny because you already knew the song was a satire.

Having said that, I think BAW's whole "protection/detention" refrain and the lyrics that surround it are so hilariously bad, particularly in their delivery, that I can't believe they're being serious. Politics and comedy don't mix after all. Just ask Ben Elton.

Have to agree with JP on the hilariously bad lyrics on BAW. A group of four of us listened to the album and we all burst out laughing at Neil and Chris's delivery. Unfortunately however I think they were being serious. It has none of the tongue in cheek delivery of 'I Want a Dog' or authority of Integral.

We endured Legacy for one listen and then on the repeat play of the album later it was turned off after 37 unbearable seconds....at least all the other tracks got played twice all the way through!

I wonder if people really love very as much they think they do or if its kinda like how time makes what was a good memory seem more awesome because of the haze of time.

I mean honestly to me at least all the greatness is pretty much all in a row in the first half of the CD IMO

the rest seems like style over substance.and I'm not sure I ever really liked go west.I rank it right up there with macho man.
