Allee Willis dies

#1 Post by Suburban_Boy »

Songwriter Allee Willis, famous for her work with Earth, Wind & Fire as well as the “Friends” theme and the “The Color Purple” Broadway song score, died Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was 72. The cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Prudence Fenton, the animator and producer who is described by a family friend as Willis’ “partner and soulmate,” was described as being “in total shock” over her best friend’s sudden death, which occurred just after 6 p.m.

Willis was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018 for a catalog that also included hits like the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” the Pet Shop Boys’ and Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” Patti LaBelle’s “Lead Me On,” EWF’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland” and the theme from “The Karate Kid,” “You’re the Best.”

I am sorry to hear this. As well as being a gifted and highly successful song writer, Allee was a visual artist with a great sense of fun and even had her own "Museum of Kitsch" items from which she would share on her Facebook. I was a friend on Facebook and the was able to message her with the news that a small fragment of What have I done to deserve this? was performed (as part of the Overture to Performance) as part of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. She was an active user of social media and would reply to messages and comments.
I had wondered if she was part of the LGBT rainbow and hearing of her female partner seems to confirm this. Condolences to all family and friends.

Sad, sad news. Especially at this time of year.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Indeed. She was having a terrific life with many friends and still had songwriting and co-writing projects on the boil.

They should release the full What Have I demo with her vocals as a tribute.
Maybe put it on the official site if they want it somewhat low key.

Allee Willis
Very sad to hear that the songwriter Allee Willis has passed away. Our then manager, Tom Watkins, introduced us to her in 1985 and we were very impressed that she had co-written Earth Wind & Fire’s classic “Boogie Wonderland”. Not long after we went into a studio with her and wrote “What have I done to deserve this?”. Allee was also a talented visual artist and so much fun to be around. She will be much missed. Neil x"

Hard to post direct links as it's a flash heavy site, but worth having a browse around https://www.alleewillis.com.

Interesting that she initially met Neil and Chris to draw them - remember this from the early fanclub? I seem to remember it appearing on a T shirt as well. https://alleewillis.com/art/logos/index.htm

Also her interesting take on the What have I done to deserve this? sessions, including Chris "storming out": https://alleewillis.com/music/What have I done to deserve this?/index.htm
Woof.

I'm unable to access certain parts of her site.. What's the story regarding Chris storming out..?
There is beauty in ugliness and ugliness in beauty.
