Three track recommendations

#1 Post by rashomon »

Hi all

A few friends and I have a little song swap thing going on where we listen to the recommended songs and discuss after. I need to recommend 3 PSB songs that fit the following categories:

1. The deep cut - recommend a track that is very much a fan base special that is absolutely top draw - be that an album track or a b side or one off that was never released to the masses

2. The surprise track - something that will make us go “oh I didn’t know this was <insert band name here>!”

3. The cringe factor - the one you’d like to expunge from the bands catalogue and never hear again.

I've got too many to choose from for the deep cut and a couple for the cringe track (WKMA or TSOTAS) ... but the surprise factor has me stumped. :wall:

What are your thoughts - would be good to see your list of three.
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

1. If you are Ok with using a single that achieved nowhere near the success it deserved, "Being Boring". Otherwise, "The Way It Used To Be"
2. Postscript (the track after Go West on Very)
3. "Bet she's not your girlfriend"
I rule. You don't.

It's difficult because even when they sound like other things/bands i.e 'This used to be the future' they always sound so PSB. Possibly something like: 'I didn't get where I am today' (which for 30 seconds doesn't sound PSB until the vocals.).

To truly not sound PSB it would probably need a Chris vocal - but then for most of us oldies - i.e those that treated Paninaro as single (it had a video and a 12" release) - a Chris vocal is as much a PSB sound as a Neil vocal. 🤷‍♂️

For reference

The audience in this case are only familiar with the usual big hits (including Being Boring) ... so a Chris vocal could be a good one for the Surprise track

1. Bet She's Not Your Girlfriend (balancing out the "embarrassing" score it received above)
2. Hello Spaceboy ("oh I didn’t know this was Pet Shop Boys! It is, and it isn't.”)
3. MetamorphosisWeddingInBerlinHoldOnHappinessIsAnOptionLegacyEmail...

Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Surprise track = In The night. People know it from The Clothes Show but nobody knows it's PSB.

2. In The Night (Arthur Baker's Extended Mix), as James said, people will be surprised it's PSB.
3. New York City Boy

1. You know where you went wrong/King's Cross
2. Lies
3. The former enfant terrible
A blues would be in B flat, pain defining wisdom,
but the soul is in the high hat, programmed in the system.
