Pet Shop Boys will sing at shipyard
(Wednesday March 15, 2006 12:46 AM)

The Pet Shop Boys will perform a free concert for 14,000 fans in a shipyard, it has been announced.

The electronic music specialists will team up with the world-renowned Northern Sinfonia orchestra to perform a live version of their soundtrack of the classic film Battleship Potemkin.

The 1925 black and white silent movie has been critically acclaimed as one of the cultural highlights of the 20th century and tells the story of the failed 1904 uprising in Russia by revolutionary sailors.

The Pet Shop Boys performance in the huge Swan Hunter yard in Wallsend, North Tyneside, will have a backdrop of at least one modern battleship which is currently under construction.

The show, a collaboration between the band, orchestra and German composer Torsten Rasch, has been put together by the NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which markets Tyneside as a cultural destination for national and international visitors.

Bosses hoped the event will draw fans of the 20-year-old band from across Europe, as well as provide a cultural highlight for the North East. Tickets for the May Day (May 1) performance are available from the visitNewcastleGateshead.com website.

Singer Neil Tennant, who was born in North Shields and has a home in the Co Durham countryside, was struck by the venue's beauty.

At a news conference at the yard, he said: "When we came here two or three months ago there were two battleships parked there. It seems a very resonant place to do this in."

"Colleague Chris Lowe said: "The music is a combination of electronics and strings and, although mainly instrumental, includes three songs."

The band has only performed the score live once before when thousands of people saw the event, with projections of the film onto landmarks, in Trafalgar Square.

There are great pics too of neil and chris in the shipyard wearing builders hats.

They're belong to press association so obviously copyright protected, so I can't upload them but maybe someone else can get their hands on some.

It goes to show how shite the official shite actually is, as once again they seem to be the last with this news..

Note, this was posted on 22.02.06..

Potemkin in Newcastle - 22 February '06
Pet Shop Boys will be performing their "Battleship Potemkin" music with the Northern Sinfonia orchestra at a free (but ticketed) event in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on May 1. Full details here when we have them.

SO WHERE IS THE UPDATE THEN?

Its their performance, their website, yet no official news!!
