I was shocked to learn that
corporal punishment is still allowed in 20 states in the US and is sometimes used quite frequently. WTF? I understand students are sometimes given a choice between corporal and other punishment, but this is still a surprise.

Re: I was shocked to learn that
Good enough. It's about time it was re-introduced in the UK. Teach some of the little f*** some respect. A good old kick up the arse did no-one any harm, and put you in your place. Nowadays, a teacher only has to speak out-of-turn to a pupil, and they are playing the abuse card.

absolutily! its going to only get worse with the soft, lilly white excuses for adults we have nowadays. when I was a kid I was on the recieving end of some serious punishments from my father. speaking for myself,I believe what it does is instill a sense of consequence for doing something wrong via a sensation...pain. words offer no consequence.its abstract.
the sensation of pain breeds a sense of respect that you arent a little God unpunishable for your actions via authority figure.
the years go by, and the pain is no longer there, but psycologically the lesson you learned via it conveys a stronger sense of choosing between right and wrong.
add to it the breakdown of the family dynamic, and parents cant discipline their kids, you see why they turn out how they do today.me me me me me.
kids assauting teachers.....parents being so stunted by political correctness, they end up with kids who actually run the house.

Lets not forget the sexual thrill it gives parents or vice principals to get their state- sanctioned physical abuse on. Yum, power power, I will smack you, hurt you, oh it feels so good. Who's your daddy, who's your daddy?
For those who find this in poor taste, just saying, it's a fine line.

Those teachers who would have to cane students shouldnt be teaching. I am a teacher and find that a thinly veiled put down is the most effective way of controlling arsehole students. kids that play up are usually bored, again this is something a eacher can prepare for in their lesson planning. i take it none of the above comments are from teachers?

I was slippered when I was at school; it never did me any harm. What it did do was act as a deterrent; I didn't much fancy a sore arse (though I realise some people do). Not only would I bring back the cane but I'd bring the birch back too!!!!!

Did you watch Jamie's Dream School? Children think that they are at school to be entertained - they're not. They're there to learn but unfortunately a generation of lily-livered bedwetting liberals have destroyed the education system and the consequences will be felt for generations to come.raggatwin wrote:Those teachers who would have to cane students shouldnt be teaching. I don't know what the fuss is about. In Ireland, half the country was raped by the Christian Brothers. It never did us any harm. In fact, it was a fine education and perfect preparation for being comprehensively violated by the IMF as adults.

It's possible that Drico's Merginator has rusted up, as it hasn't seen much action recently.

Glenn, so you're okay with some teacher or principal (in a union!) smacking your kid? Really? Miss Scapa ("Source?") Flow provides no link at all to assess what exactly the f*** he's talking about here. But he's probably right there was no doubt some right wing initiative to re-permit this bullshit in regions of the country where grotesque new regressive barbaric shit is like, a daily occurence. I'm glad you're cool with having your kid physically uh, disciplined by a school administrator. Because to object to that would be lily-livered "political correctness", which according to the likes of you is apparently worse than Hitler, the way that (meaningless) phrase is constantly invoked on your political side of the fence.glennjridge wrote:absolutily! its going to only get worse with the soft, lilly white excuses for adults we have nowadays. when I was a kid I was on the recieving end of some serious punishments from my father. speaking for myself,I believe what it does is instill a sense of consequence for doing something wrong via a sensation...pain. words offer no consequence.its abstract.

Yeah, throw this one into "Broken Britain" as a US parallel for sure. Where people of Glenn's political persuasion hate teachers and their protection by devastated unions, but is okay with them physically disciplining his kid if need be. Where we're already soaring towards Gilded Age levels of inequality with dark Dickensian chimes tolling for the last of of the American middle and working classes, but you know. "Political correctness" is just so annoying, the way you can't call someone nasty slurs any more without disapproval. Therefore, bring back school beatings by people in authority upon children. Makes perfect sense. Yeah, we're doomed here.
Hey Glenn, maybe physically punishing children has nothing to do with "political correctness" and everything to do with just being f*** wrong in every way, okay? And the bit I bolded up there makes me really worry that you're a parent. Serious. "the sensation of pain breeds a sense of respect" is a really disturbing thing to read.

I just so happen to think that spanking is ok for kids ...by the parents.. I know in todays world people like you cant imagine how anybody raised children before 2011... too bad. I...am a parent. not you...todays kids are having more babies younger, without having a family, and are alot more wild and rebellious.something changed from how kids were more respectful back then. theres no serious discipline anymore. that means no consequences other than words that float on the air.
you'd like to cast spanking a little kid as on par with King Henrys the stretching rack, but your just being silly.you're never going to know what its like to merge with a woman and raise something that came from both of you and send it out into the world, so you're a leading authority on nothing.

Miss? Erm, I don't think you need a link, as 1. I said that it's legal in many states and 2. That fact is easily findable on many internet sites. Whereas info about Neil's jowls remains elusive. But I see that still upsets you since no one came to your defense on that issue. Next time, maybe try dropping it instead of bringing it up in an unrelated thread? Re: I was shocked to learn that
Glenn, I'm not addressing your wish to punish kids by force. But I will address your attitude that there was some golden age years ago when kids were closer to angels. When was this? the 30s? 50s? 90s? Remember, 120 years ago, it wasn't anything strange for a 15 year old to get married and start popping kids. What you are against are the ills of modernity. The problem is we have extended childhood beyond anything reasonable. The oft cited (and perhaps a bit wrong) Philipe Arias tells us that before around 1600 there WAS no childhood, kids were just little adults. I say, kids don't need disicipline, they need freedom and responsilbity. And I believe they need it in almost all aspects of their lives. In some areas, such as sexual, or the ability to leave home, this will upset most. I recommend John Holt's book Escape From Childhood. I just don't think more authority in your face is the answer kids need. Quite the opposite.glennjridge wrote:I just so happen to think that spanking is ok for kids ...by the parents..
