Re: Name the next Pet Shop Boys album

It's Pet Shop Boys.

Pert, to the point, with the added bonus of dodgy connotations.

Re: Glastonbury 2000

Looking back, this was the most confusing period of their career. They never looked as out of place and time as they did around 2000. That original Glastonbury performance was pivotal in what they were about to become and what they were forced to leave behind. Commercial returns were in decline and ...

Re: After the third album of the triology, I want PSB to do an unexpected movement

The Disco series should be consigned to history and the bargain basement bins. Why should they restrict themselves because of some spurious tradition? Single word album titles are restrictive as it is, but justifiable as a stylistic conceit. It fits their minimalistic aesthetic. Disco offers no such...

Re: *YOUR* Perfect PSB 'Best of' Album

PSB exist in a strange place now with regards to "greatest hits". Any one disc album reduces them to their biggest hits - which is perfectly logical - but simultaneously eliminates the vast bulk of their career from consideration. In that sense, it doesn't really serve as an aperitif for further exp...

Re: BBC4 TOTPs Heads Up..

Fair play to Smith. Most people settle for irritating others when alive. He's managing it from beyond the grave. Superior grade curmudgeonliness.

Re: BBC4 TOTPs Heads Up..

My understanding is you won't see any West End Girls TOTP performances because they've all been "Smithed".

Re: 25 years of Can You Forgive Her

well, hold on - in 1992 PSB did a legendary show at the Hacienda, did The Crying Game with Boy George & Disappointed with Electronic, released Performance on video, and did The South Bank Show (which remains the best documentary about them to this day.) Not bad for a completely silent year! 1992 al...

Re: Why do people hate “Before”?

It’s aesthetic preference. Going high on the register can work well if your vocal range allows it - or if it works in isolation, like the segment in Love Comes Quickly. But Neil sings all of the verses of Before like Kermit the Frog on helium - and it does him no favours, in my view. Andy Bell’s vo...

Re: 25 years of Can You Forgive Her

Yeah, they definitely needed 1992 off. I think people were fairly sated by them at that point and everyone needed to reboot. Saturation point had been reached with an album, six singles, a world tour, and a greatest hits inside 15 months from September 1990. I’m not sure taking longer with the likea...

Re: 25 years of Can You Forgive Her

It was the first year they didn't release a single - and this on the back of the flop performances of half of their 1991 singles and the compilation. Everything is relative, but in PSB terms, 1992 was non existent. That South Bank Show special talked openly about the problems they would now have in ...

Re: Why do people hate “Before”?

Bilingual is, arguably, their most inconsistent record. The opening is phenomenally intense, with the lonely, dystopian Discoteca merging into the flippant, but still emotionally isolated Single. You could make the case that the protagonist is the same in both tracks, "going out and carrying on as n...

Re: 25 years of Can You Forgive Her

Underneath the bombast lay hidden layers of, well, bombast. Marvellous. This was a lead single - the gold standard, in fact. Like all great Pet Shop Boys endeavours, there is always more than meets the eye. Buried beneath the dramatic orchestral stabs is a high-pitched tone of emotional distress tha...

Re: Why do people hate “Before”?

I like the agony aunt quality of Before, where uncle Neil - the voice of experience - reassures us that all will be well in the end. But it's a pretty underwhelming lead single. In comparison to Can You Forgive Her?, So Hard, Domino Dancing, and It's a Sin, I think it's second division. Many people ...
