Forgotten gigs

#1 Post by Tom Angel »

Doe anyone know the Pet Shop Boys Setlist
at Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY, USA

They played here shortly after the Hacienda gig in June 1992 -

I had no idea about it! These are fascinating - these smaller gigs. I hope they answer my question about releasing some of these - but I suspect the sound isn't good enough.

Hey Tom -
I attended this gig. I don't remember too much about it, except that I was thrilled it was a "proper" gig. In other words, a band playing to the audience, not like Performance. They stood in front of a huge wall of computers, reel to reels, etc throughout the show, like the DJCulture sleeve. They performed "Being Boring" (which they did not for Performance) and I was thrilled. It was a long, expansive setlist. I also recall a New York Times reviewer standing next to me and asking me the title to each of the songs they played which I proudly told him. Also, Right Said Fred was in the audience mingling about and the crowd seemed more interested in them than our boys.

I too would love to see the setlist for this, maybe it would jigger my memory a bit more.

Isn't this the show that has bits from it featured in the "...Seriously" video?

Also, they did perform "Being Boring" on the UK leg of the tour as part of the encore. At least they did when I saw them at the Wembley shows on that tour.

The Tower Of London shows in 2006 also aren't mentioned in the list of shows in the Super tour program for some reason.

A Google search reveals West End girls and Opportunities both made the setlist, as did Rent and Where the streets have no name. In Literally the concert is covered in the news section, revealing they played for longer than in Manchester (suggesting maybe that the setlists were largely similar?) but that the boys’ highlight was It’s a sin / I will survive.
Woof.

I was there! Here's the setlist and some random notes:

Roseland, 239 west 52nd Street
Monday, June 8, 1992

1) Music For Boys
2) Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)
3) Rent
4) Love Comes Quickly
5) Domino Dancing
6) Paninaro
7) It’s A Sin/I Will Survive
8) Violence
9) Being Boring
10) King’s Cross
11) So Hard
12) Was It Worth It?
13) West End Girls
14) Go West

Ticket was $35

Was a benefit for “LIFEbeat - The Music Industry Fights AIDS”

Salt-N-Pepa were the opening act, performing “Let's Talk About Aids”

All the vocals for Paninaro were electronic (Vocoder?) - Chris did not sing, drank a beer instead. Ha-ha.

The crowd response to the "I Will Survive" part of "It's A Sin" was huge. Neil and Chris seemed slightly startled by the roar of the crowd and exchanged knowing glances.

The version of Rent was unique - very upbeat and epic.

Wow, great info!! Thanks for sharing! I hadn't arrived in NYC for another two years, otherwise I would've been there! 8)

Wow - this is great info.

I had no idea about this gig.

I'd have loved to hear So Hard. It's a pretty perfect set list actually.

So jealous, and that we'll never get to hear or see it makes it even more tantalising.

I'm guessing the song arrangements are the same as the Hacienda gig and, for the three songs that weren't performed at the Hacienda gig (Music for Boys, Streets and So Hard), the same as the Heaven gig from late 1991. Recordings of both gigs are floating around the internet.

Seeing Go West a year and a bit before it came out as a single must have been super-exciting!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing

You can hear a similar performance here: https://www.mixcloud.com/heejune-park/p ... 13-may-92/

Not quite the same without a chorus, but still would of been exciting.

Wasn't there, but I love this performance: ""Live At Heaven Nightclub, October 15th, 1991."

https://www.mixcloud.com/heejune-park/p ... at-heaven/

At around 27:24 the computers fail to kick-in for It's Alright.... magic moment because it just feels like an extended mix :)

In a different vein, I do love the intimacy of their Priceless Gig performance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSy0ONEw1NY

Maybe some would turn their nose up at the commercialism of it, but I'm thankful as it's quite a unique performance :)

You can hear me shout 'love comes quickly' at the Heaven gig just before Neil corrects me by announcing Being boring!

I attended the Hacienda gig, right at the front, but not the Heaven one. I still have my ticket and t-shirt. Remember it like it was yesterday - heady days!
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.
