B-Sides since 2009's "Format"

#1 Post by mr5973 » Thu 03 Oct 2019, 12:36 pm

Hello,

could you please help me? I was trying to make a list with all B-Sides/Non-Album songs since 2009's compilation album "Format". This is what i came up with:

My Girl
Viva La Vida/Domino Dancing

Glad All Over
I Cried For Us
A Certain “Je Ne Sais Quoi”
The Way Through The Woods
I Started A Joke

Hell
In His Imagination
Baby (Demo)

Listening
One Night
Inside

Entschuldigung!
Get It Online

No More Ballads
Odd Man Out

In Bits
One-Hit Wonder

The White Dress
Wiedersehen

A Cloud In A Box
The Dead Can Dance

Give Stupidity A Chance
On Social Media
What Are We Going To Do About The Rich?
The Forgotten Child

An Open Mind
No Boundaries

Could you experts take a look at it and tell me which songs I might have forgotten?

Thank you! :-)

Michael

I think PSB said in an issue of Literally, the first beside in a follow up collection could be the 7-inch version of Fugitive from the German-only Beautiful people single. I’m not sure about the Agenda tracks, maybe the Super version of Left to my own devices.
This is a song about boys and girls. You hear it playing all over the world.

Yes you're correct.

Left to my own devices (Super version) indeed.

Not sure about the Agenda EP. Do the four tracks qualify as b-sides? Is Stupidity the lead track and the other three b-sides. Hard to know.

It's not exactly on a par with Alternative, is it? :-/

It would be a very weird collection, starting with an edit of Fugitive from a German-only CD single, followed by four cover versions then one original (Je ne sais quoi) then two more covers, a couple of demos and then jumping over to the x2 b-sides. I think it would make more sense to release a 6 disc collection of all the EMI b sides from In the night through to Inside (they could call it "In" ;) ) and then worry about the x2 ones in the future if/when they have more.

Yes It doesn't look like their best collection, the tracks I have on the PSB_archive USB pen in my car are:

A Certain “Je Ne Sais Quoi”
One Night
Entschuldigung!
Get It Online
One-Hit Wonder
A Cloud In A Box
The Dead Can Dance

This is what I like from all that stuff.
Expressing passion, explaining pain
This is my kind of music

My Girl and Viva La Vida/Domino Dancing are part of the Christmas EP, just like Agenda has four tracks. Maybe they shouldn't be on the b-side set.
Apart from that, looks like a complete list.

Yeah they're OK for it. It was a sort of double-A side with All over the world and IDOSAC as the two promos and Viva and My girl as bonus tracks. Agenda is a bit different. Although Stupidity got the most attention there wasn't any kind of promo made (are promos even a thing now?) so arguably all four tracks have equal "value".

There was of course the Record Store Day 7" single but I doubt that really counts, nor does the 12" of Fluorescent.

Could "Only Love" sneak on the next B-side comp?

More facetiously, I would be vastly amused if they could get the rights to stick Superchumbo's "Tranquilizer" on just so everyone can hear Neil actually intone, "f*** off and die."

I have a similar playlist. On mine I also have:

Fugitive (seven inch mix) before My Girl
A Powerful Friend (7” Version) after Viva La Vida (as it’s the b side to the Record Store Day 7” of Love Life) and
Left To My Own Devices (Super Version) after The Dead Can Dance

If you were including all four tracks from the Agenda EP you’d need to consider also adding the re-recordings of It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas and All Over The World from the Christmas EP.

And if you were going for non-album tracks rather than pure b-sides, you could consider Love Life, Together, the Record Store Day re-recording of Fluorescent and Brick England.

As things stand, Dreamland is strictly speaking a non-album track too. Image
Woof.

Forget it, this list will never be conclusive in a correct way no matter how you go about it. I thought the 80's was messy with non-albums singles but it's nothing compared to the chaos of the last years.

The compilation is meant to be strictly single b-sides. No miscellaneous non-album tracks or alternative mixes.

The list of currently released b-sides since 2012's 1996-2009 Format is:
Glad All Over
I Cried For Us
A Certain "Je Ne Sais Quoi"
The Way Through The Woods (Long Version)
I Started A Joke
Hell
In His Imagination
Baby (2003 demo)
Listening
One Night
Inside
Entschuldigung!
Get It Online
No More Ballads
Odd Man Out
In Bits
One-Hit Wonder
The White Dress
Wiedersehen
A Cloud in a Box
The Dead Can Dance

Let's see how far off we are compared to the previous compilations.
Alternative is 31 tracks. Format is 38 tracks.
The list above is 21 tracks, so we have a while to go.

Left to my own devices (Super version) is a complete re-recording and should be no. 22 on this list.

You must have the Japanese version of Alternative with Girls and boys as the last track!
