Just listened to Relentless - it's not very good
Re: Just listened to Relentless - it's not very good
Just dusted off my DF118 and given it a spin. Superb!
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning.
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

It certainly should be Remastered.y3potential wrote: ↑Tue 28 Apr 2020, 10:32 pm I adore Relentless. It should have been remastered and included on the Very Further Listening package.
You gotta have fun!

Yes, if they ever re-release it, it should be remastered.

Around 1999, I found the 3x12" for next to nothing in a Spanish record store. I've only ever played the vinyl records twice. It's my most prized PSB item. I love the music, I love the packaging. It's not even thát expensive on Discogs if you ask me. I also saw one at the Utrecht record fair for an okay price last fall.
The title of this thread is just ridiculous btw. If Relentless isn't good, nothing is.

Its great that this forum has a range of views - but I’m amazed that Relentless can be described as “not very good”.
I toyed with writing a 500 word rebuttal but instead I realised that I mainly feel sorry for the OP that he doesn’t find it one of the best bits of the PSB cannon.
I too listened again to it (more in incredualation than any other reason - and it is still a fantastic piece of work that manages to cover both ‘gender fuildity’ and ‘fatal car accidents’.
Each to their own I guess.

I couldn't disagree more, I've just listened to Relentless for the first time and I love it.

Relentless is not very good, are you MAD! The Man Who Has Everything is worth having just on its own.
This is the true lost ark of Pet Shop Boys releases. I'm only gutted I never got the 12" singles version.

After reading this thread, on my run this evening I put Relentless on to listen to.... It's still one of the best albums out there!
One of my fondest memories is driving back home from a day buying mountain bikes in Chester, with a car full of mates who were all into extreme rock and dance, metal, etc... and I put it on the stereo. It was only on "One thing leads to another" that they realised it was PSB. Instead of taking the piss as usual, they said they never realised that they did music like that.
Fun memories.
Also, the drop to the chorus in Forever in Love is probably one of the best euphoric moments in music ever.

Relentless is definitely a product of it's time. It sounded amazing when it came out. I didn't own a CD player so I cassette taped a copy of a mater and wore it right out. Already mentioned I think but there are 3 totally spine tingling moments on this album: the drop in Forever in Love, the last minute or so of The Man Who Has Everything and the house piano middle bit on One Thing Leads To Another. Fantastic.

Actually, the whole of One Thing Leads To Another is brilliant, and the demo knocking round on Youtube with the original lyrics in 'order'.

Being inspired by your post just given the above a watch, it struck me that the bit about narrator finding out 'her' turning out to be 'him' could have been inspired by, or written for, The Crying Game. Given the time period and their involvement with the film it seems possible. Perhaps the track had its genesis from a potential song they had written for the filmscousepsbfan wrote: ↑Thu 07 May 2020, 9:11 am Actually, the whole of One Thing Leads To Another is brilliant, and the demo knocking round on Youtube with the original lyrics in 'order'.
Still waiting to hear the Adam Freeland, Manhattan Clique and Axwell mixes of Integral.

My head is spinning is one of the best tracks produced ever! and should be my theme song, since I have a recent bout of low blood pressure :p
Re: Just listened to Relentless - it's not very good
With my partner out a rare chance to hear again at almost full volume with the doors rattling and the speakers pumping air, a benefit of detached living... An enveloping experience, really doesn't need a remaster, absolutely top drawer PSB. Oh for a Relentless 2!
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

That has to have the ‘biggest’ ending of any PSB track, no?
Lyrics are better the other way around though… as in the final version… imagine the kind of video that might have been possible if this had been a single…!
