Guardian 100 Greatest UK No.1's

#1 Post by Gabby »

Has anyone been following the Guardian's 100 Greatest UK No.1's?

https://www.theguardian.com/music/serie ... -1-singles

We're down to the final 5 this week (1 per weekday), and still no PSB.

There are "rules" and an artist can only appear once in the list. I'd be stunned if one of West End girls, It's a Sin, Always on my mind, or Heart were overlooked in this.

My money is on Always on my mind - seems to be the go-to for things like this, a crowdpleaser that conveniently skirts around having to speak to the amazing songwriting abilities of Neil and Chris.

Yeah been following it. When it got to 15, and there was still no PSB. I did start to think they’ll make the Top 10

There's some real weird choices in that 100, think anyone could be number one, as long as it's not Ed Bore-an.
is is and isnt isnt

I’ve been following it since around 40.

Think it will be tomorrow for West End girls ;-)

There'll be even more protests on the world if the Boys aren't in this list. Its unfathomable to me that they wouldnt be based on some of the other entries.

The only reason I can think of for them not making the list, is that the critics are all big fans of the Pogues.

A snub that would be pointless and 30 years too late

Ghost Town and something (not Something) by The Beatles must be in the top three. Of course Strawberry Fields / Penny Lane should be number one but only got to number two.

I've been reading this everyday and also waiting for them to appear. I was expecting at least a top 10 position. I'd be very surprised if both they didn't make it and also if they are in the top three. Perhaps today?

I don't think they allow covers in the rules, so that rules out 'Always On My Mind' and 'Heart' is less well known as a number one I think. So only 'West End Girls' and 'It's A Sin' could make it.

There may be more covers on the list, but off the top of my head, Tainted Love is on there.

Nothing Compares 2 U too. Anyway, the Fabs are at number three so that clearly just leaves The Specials and something from the Abba-esque EP.....
