The new album: A little back to the 80's?

Synths always sound futuristic though, don't they? Even the oldest Moog sounds like something from a gleaming crystalline cityscape just over the horizon.

well if one can say such and such song or sound, sounds 80'ish,like all of us are forever doing on these boards when discussing various songs, it is possible to relate a certain sound as being "dated' or old sounding. so a synth or drum sound can make a song sound old.

... I never liked the drum sounds of the 80's. all those reverbed to death hand claps and drums that sounded like machine guns in an echo chamber. even those dry, fat,boring analogy synth sounds annoy me also from the 80's. I want ultra modern sounding music,like "we're the petshopboys'.

really?...i don't think so....what about fischerspooner?...they're still doing electro...just check out the new single 'never win'....or the new one by goldfrapp...i think the electro thing is still happening and is still very now.

Cos the new Fishersponner album (sounds a bit "has been" to me... I mean honestly, Is it That Good.?.) Goldfrapp is another thing...I think they have developped there own "sound"...

Of course , I'm still getting over the fact that thy're gone a bit more commercial....on there new album ...

By my standard, Goldfrapp, is not comparable to Fisher (BTW I loved there fisrt album, and have singles and 2nd album)

I truly believe that PSB should get back to simple melodies with lush production and Dark edges has in : Left to my own devices, Some Speculations, I'm not Scared and even Was that What It Was?....and others...

Anyway that's my 2 cents...

Quite interesting points of discussion. The whole electroclash term was so overused and misplaced. There where bands that where just lumped together coz they all had similar approaches to music. Personally I've become annoyed with the term. Besides its the name nicked from Larry Tee's music festival anyway.........

Fischerspooner's Odyssey is way better than #1 IMO but without that huge visual fanfare and the near bankrupt record labels. We Need A War was the highlight for me. It's good but I did expect better.......

The new Goldfrapp album does seem to be heading down the commerical route and I'm still not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing.......still it seems more like an extension of Black Cherry and Felt Mounatain seemed so long ago . I agree with Goldfrapp developing their 'own sound' and I certainly wouldn't compare them with Fischerspooner.....

As for The Boys I'm sure they will surprise us again........by the time they release it the 80's revival will be truly and utterly dead.......so will anyone take any notice? Personally I like some dated sounds and wouldn't mind some of the sounds from their early b-sides incorporated. Still I'm a huge fan so they haven't disappointed me yet

There is the whole question here of definitions.

Whilst electro was undoubtedly born in the 1980's, in the same way that guitar-based pop was born in the 1960's, does that make each genre 80's and 60's respectively?

Are The Killers an early 80's throwback group? Are Travis a 60's throwback? Is Pet Shop Boys electro produced in 2005 an 80's throwback?

The answer to those questions is invariably YES and NO.

Yes, these acts all gain inspiration from another era musically, but the point is that now, with music diversifying into so many seperate, legitimate genres, its not longer possible to define music in purely generational terms.

Would you listen to something now and say 'oh god, thats so 2004'. No, because genres take inspiration from a variety of eras. Music technolgy has advanced to such a point that, sonically, anything really is possible. This was not the case in previous decades.

Electro may have been born in the 80's, but electro produced in 2005 is no more 80's than any other music made this year. Musicians use the tools around them to create the sound they want - and whilst you can apply labels to everything you hear, that opinion is just not as valid as it once was.

I hope there will be some track that it can remember 80's years but at the same time I hope for some "electro-pop" track.

I love many of PSB´s old versions of the songs and as ´we´ve heard some unreleased clips of demos they´re fab.

That's exactly what I like about 80's pop. And I wouldn't be sad if the new PSB album sounded that way. Anyway I like them a lot and up to this moment there never has been an album which let me down.

In my opinion the new album will sound like DISCO 3, MIRACLES and FLAMBOYANT.
