I love Go West and New York city boy. If Go West never had been released PSB would have been forgotten long time ago. Go West it's a really good song with an amazing production and people get crazy in the concerts with it. That's why this song use to be the last one (or almost) to be played.
Yeah, but it hasnt aged well. Its too cheesy and 'instant' to age well.

Go West may have been a hit, but it also gave the PSB's a reputation for being OTT camp cover version artists, and did them no favours whatsoever in the eyes of the more general public.

It was also a time they were worried they were going to bomb (post No.24 'Was it worth it', and the relatively damp commercial reaction to Behaviour) - so they were scratching around for any old sell-out cheesy cover version. It completely lacks any artistic integrity. They just pushed the panic button and ran for cover. Luckily, it worked, but it hasnt stood the test of time very well.

Nah, you have got it wrong. Go West is one of PSB's best singles. In what way hasn't in aged well? The production is top notch. It still sounds as fresh now as it did when it was bellowed out of the radio stations in August 93 and everybody was raving about it. Go to a football too and you will hear it!

This i agree with. It's strange though, because when i always mention this affecting PSB's career, you all argue the point.

Well, I have 2 agree that Go west is camp, chessy and has'nt aged well (still it's quite a good dance song)

In spite of all this time, when PSB play Go West is one of the best part of the concerts. I still thinking is real great song (it's an hymn). The worst thing of the song could be the lyrics. :?
But the rest is something really good (It would be so important to see PSB creating a REAL hymn like that in the new album, a song where a lot of people could feel great in a concert "not only fans").

I really disagree with that. I think it is one of their most powerful songs. I think its beautifully produced, and one of the most tragic and heartbreaking songs they've ever released. Its a work of total genius imho, and definately one of my (joint) favourite PSB tracks ever.

To me, it just sounds as if the singer is singing about a dreamland, a ideal, that he will never actually get to, whether he realises it or not.
just a bad loser

That's because PSB's own songs haven't been that great in the last 10 years.

I DO AGREE! Because PSB were so famous in America Latina and worldwide thanks to Go West... I knew PSB through Go West... People in my country (Colombia) remember them thanks to this song!! I think Go West is one of the best singles of PSB carrer... The first song in Pop Art album is Go West and that isn't a coincidence.

I'm not suggesting that Go West wasnt a hit. Of course it was.

What I am saying is that is gave the Pet Shop Boys a reputation for being OTT camp cover version artists. Hardly a mark of quality.

Scatman John had a rather big 'hit' a few years ago, but that doesnt exactly give him any kudos NOW in the eyes of the general record buying public.

And, when you have a duo which are too old and minging to sell sex, they need credibility. No more cover versions, please.

Its a Village People cover with a cheesy early-nineties dance production ticking along in the background.

Quite how this is a 'work of genius' is beyond me. Even the PSB's themselves only ever intended it as a simple pop hit. I really don't think it says anything much, unless you make a load of assumptions about its meaning which are probably wrong, and intensely post-rationalise it.

Next people will be saying The Scatman is an undiluted take on the innate ability of society to consider the juxtaposition of an old man with a stutter selling records to a teenage audience so conscious of self-image. A true work of genius.

Of course, it might just be about an old perv who enjoys scat.

Everybody now: skip-a-did-e-did... dod-dod-dod-dod...

The brilliance of Go West is not its cheesy dance production, but it's the way Pet Shop Boys covered it. The subtle changes in the melody, the newly written bridge, the one tone up (before the final chorus) and the dance part after the final 'goooo weeeeest.'

Scatman John died a few years ago, by the way...

More or less in the middle of the song, the sound of the trumpets while Silvia is singing is amazing too.

I miss the sound of trumpets in a PSB song. Some people think it sounds very 80's but I don't think so. It's so ellegant.
In Suburbia the sound of the trumpet is brilliant (the last part of the song), in How can you expect to be taken seriously?? (extended mix) is amazing too and Westend Girls (but I know this sound is similar to a trumpet but it's not a trumpet really, it was made with the keyboards by Stephen Hague).

If "Go west" made me a PSB fan then there's no need to tell what this song means for me...

If people will remeber PSB many years later, then "Go west" will be one of the reasons... just a personal opinion :)
