What! No Vinyl?!!

my friend is a DJ, and he loves the soundtrack. He's been sent the promo and he mixed Nyet into a set, on the smaller, alternative dance floor. It didn't exactly set the dance floor alight, but it did get several people asking what it was and where they could get it.

As if you really want a beta tape!! Vinyl figures have indeed risen, especially the 7" format which is doing really well at the moment.

The Beta tape would also do really well if only it was given the chance.

I also wouldn't say that vinyl albums are meant for the dancefloor, I can't imagine a DJ playing a Pet Shop Boys album or any album for that matter. Thousands of albums still get released on vinyl and obviously many of them aren't dance orientated.

Thousands of album are not released on vinyl. Some are, either classical music re-issues in audiophile series or limited edition issues of cult bands to cater the collectors scene. It's not as if they're issued or sell in large quantities. True, vinyl sales have been increasing in recent years, but that has to do with their sales being *really* low overall. Vinyl represents something like 5% of the market, if I remember correctly.

As for 7''s, nearly all 7'' singles issued these days are runs of 500 copies that are issued as novelty items.

All indie bands release vinyl, Coldplay released 'Speed Of Sound' on 10" and 7" (1 cd) while even Bananarama released a 7" single. It's true that you get emerging bands releasing '500 only' limited editions to create hype but bands like Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and Interpol release a vinyl as a limited edition when in fact they are editions of 5-10,000.

BTW Disco 2, a continuous mix, was avaliable on Vinyl.

The actual film and unedited release are both 73 minutes.

The vast majority of 12" records sold now are dance/club/DJ oriented.

Its always been the format of choice for DJ's, I really didn't think I was saying anything particularly controversial. I can't see any possible benefits for its use in the home over a CD.

Jon, its just a nostalgia thing. I mean, really, who doesn't own a CD player?

Its actually very difficult to buy vinyl outside of very large or very specialist music stores. I mean, your local HMV might have 'X&Y' on vinyl if you're lucky, but thats it.
