Funny comment by Peter Hook

#1 Post by lucienchardon »

There is a very good interview with Peter Hook in the Filter magazine web page and he makes a funny comment about PSB:

A lot of people have that misconception that as soon you get famous, you can take limos everywhere. They don’t realize you have the same problems as everyone else.
It’s the same misconception I used to have. I meet people and think they’re millionaires and they’re not. I used to think The Pet Shop Boys would be millionaires and they’re not! They’re skint! (Laughs) They have to do gigs to pay off their tax bill. It’s quite a popular misconception even amongst our own.

I'd still rather to have those gigs to pay my tax bill...

The PSB are NOT "skint"... far from it.

Of course they are millionaires. I remember Neil being asked in the late 80s if he was, and he answered yes. He also said that they got just under a pound (between them) per album sold. That is quite a lot of moulah. I don't doubt that they are paying huge amounts of tax though.

rich lists etc are normally hugely inaccurate and based on a lot of assumption and speculation. Whilst I doubt they are 'skint' they are not as well off as might be assumed from their record sales, I think Neil once said that they get about £1.20 per CD sold split between them as performers and about the same as songwriters. Thay have done a lot of stuff that costs money, Performance, Savoy Shows, recording costs for new b-sides (singles rarely turning a profit), expensive videos. The tax bill is probably for PSB Partnership rather than themselves
Still waiting to hear the Adam Freeland, Manhattan Clique and Axwell mixes of Integral.

Hey... I'm not saying that they are super-rich, but what I am saying is that they are far from skint.

Come on, the subtext in this whole skint comment really is:

"Ha-ha look at the once big PSB... superstars of the eighties... but today just "where-are-they-now-one-hit-wonders"... now pretty much broke."

That magazine article is about thirteen years old or so! I remember that. Vince Clarke was valued at about 15 or £20m.

They're not skint, but they aren't filthy rich.

I don't think that's the subtext at all. He is saying that he has to work to pay his bills because the interviewer asked him if he is DJing and doing other things just because he likes to work. If that were the subtext he'd be saying the same about New Order.

Did not Chris say on the Savoy DVD that he has to keep performing to pay the bills as they are not that rich..

From what mag is that scan from ? Q ?
They have quite a lot money according to that.
Interviewer:
-What would you tell someone about yourself if you wanted to impress them?

Chris:
-I´ve got a 12-inch plonker.

I think you're all taking it too seriously. This is Peter Hook after all, he's just joking.
