I agree totally

First single is a publicity one... because its your first release in ages... fans buy it and people notice it... so it has to be strong but not necessarily your best

Second single is prefect timing for the cream of your crop!

Yet another pointless speculation thread.
Come on people we are better than this.

Yes, what is the point of releasing your best single first? Ok, maybe you get a few album sales. But surely it's better to keep your better releases back to keep the sales of the album up?

Who knows? Maybe the first release may be just "great" as opposed to "amazing"? :P
I rule. You don't.

Well, it depens. If you know this album is having a lot of singles, I think is a good thing to start with a weaker song (one of the best but not the best).

Some similar MJ did in their "golde years". For example, the 2 first singles of Michael Jackson's "Bad" were the songs "I just can't stop loving you" and "Bad". Good songs but not the best ones, because he knew the audience was going to buy these singles for being the first ones.
But after that, he launched the BEST songs of the album to be the next three singles "The way you make me feel", "Man in the mirrow" and "Dirty Diana" .

The result was 5 number ones in USA.

It's funny because the famous song "Thriller" was one of the last singles of the album of the same title, not one of the first ones.

...I have to disagree with all your comments about not releasing your best single first. For the Pet Shop Boys in 2006, after Release, the ages Neil & Chris are (like it or not age matters here), it is ALL about the first single. They need to create momentumn from the start. The second single, no matter how good, will receive less attention, and ultimately sell less.

...they simply do not have that luxury anymore. It's time for them to put up, or finally shut-up.

But you can call the attention of young people with your first single although it's not one of the best. How?.......well, the characters of Little Britain can help.

For the second single we are going to confide in one of the best and most commercial songwriters: Diane Warren (Numb)

Then.....we can make a little speculation here:
For the third and fourth ones we can confide in the 2 classic commercial PSB sounds:

a) Anthem: Integral
b) Dance: The Sodom And Gomorrah Show

(If something goes wrong, you can confide in Trevor Horn).

Well, I think it could be a good plan.

So Hard was their last truly exciting first single off an album. Back when they were doing innovative things with music. Since then, it's all been about making a low-key re-appearance then following up with something a bit stronger - the most obvious choice for single - as if to protect from album sales.

Can You Forgive Her was better than Go West
Before was better than Se A Vida E
I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more was better than New York city boy

It's not really about which song is better - in the abover examples I'd argue that the first singles are all better than the second singles. However, the second singles are all more commercial than the first singles.

This is what PSB can't afford anymore: to NOT release the most commercial single first.

For me and people in general (no psb fans), Go West is better than Can you forgive her, Se a vida e is better than Before and New York city boy is better than I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more.
