I thought it was my favorite album at one time....It still might be but there are some songs that drag it down. Still, can you argue with great pop like "To Step Aside" and the hypnotic "Before"? It's a well rounded album with some great writing. Paired with the bonus disc from the remastered verison...excellent! For some reason, this set costs a lot more compared to the others but is available throgh most online retailers...Well worth it!

I never realized people didn't like "Before". It's different a bit like everything else out there (at the time) but I like it a lot.Steve Fett wrote:IMO its a brilliant PSB album - probably my 4th favourite...
I love the diversity of the album, and the only track I dislike is "Before" - their worst single EVER !
I think that "Single" and "Before" should have been replaced with the releases instead of "The Survivors" and "Discoteca"...
"A Red Letter Day" is one of my fave PSB tracks ever - and the whole production of Bilingual sounds very polished.

Bilingual is their most varied and adventurous album, but sadly it's also the first time their artistical judgments really slipped. Whereas before that it was very hard to find a weak track on any PSB album, Bilingual had a handful of them: Metamorphosis, Electricity, Saturday Night Forever...

I agree. Especially if you add "Se A Vida E" to that list.Eldritch wrote:Bilingual is their most varied and adventurous album, but sadly it's also the first time their artistical judgments really slipped. To me Bilingual only has two truly top notch songs: Discoteca and It Always Comes As A Surprise.

For me Billingual would be in the bottom group of PSB studio albums.
THE BEST - Very, Actually, Behaviour
THE MIDDLE - Please, Introspective, Nightlife
THE BOTTOM - Bilingual, Release
Although that is not to say I completely dislike Bilingual and Release...its just that compared to the other albums they have more "filler".

Hmm, don't know if you can compare it to release. It may have been Latino influenced, but to me it's probably their most POP album of the 90s (I consider Very to be more of a dance album)petshopgirlxxx wrote:It could be because some fans resented the 'Latino beats" (for want of a better word). Like Release for example, and how many resented the 'guitar-based sound'.

I love Bilingual but it would be better if they had left out 'Before' and 'Saturday Night Forever' and made 'Electricity' about 1 minute shorter since it gets kind of repetitive towards the end.
Bilingual resulted in some great remixes. The Trouser Enthusiasts remix of Discoteca is one of my favorite remixes. I would have included that in the mix disc of PopArt.
