In 1985 two men went to a recording studio in London. During a forthnight one of them sang the vocals to 716 self-penned songs, while the other one hung around. The recordings where locked in a vault and buried beneath a pet shop.
Therefore, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe still sound like themselves 22 years ago. The time acpsule did not, sadly, have room for Chris Lowe's music arrangements, always founded on occasionally genius popdisco, but more often sagging ballads.
The latter dominate Fundamental, and things are not bettered by producer Trevor Horn, who makes soundscapes sounding like many decades ago. "Integral" and "Minimal", it has to be said, is pop that no other band can match, and some of the other heard-it-thousand-times-before songs can maybe pass on a sunny day.
I wouldn't have thought Fundamentalsim would have got mentioned in a review seeing as it's a special edition and the actual album that many people will be buying...
everyone seems to assume if its a slow track chris had nothing to do with it, but just going by literally he wrote casanova in hell on neils piano,only the wind,jealousy,you choose,to speak is a sin, and thats just off the top of my head,
these are the songs that they came up with. trevor didnt hold chris back or anything.
If I am not wrong, this is the second time a Norwegian magazine bashes the album (or is it the translation of the first one?)

I have to add: This isn't a high end magazine. It's a free magazine distributed via clothes shops, cinemas etc. and the journalism is not always on par. That said, they gave a glorius full page review of the reissues, and they even liked Release
Sometimes things seem pretty easy, as long as a band does not sound like they should and have before, it's no good. And when they do sound like they did before it's even worse.
Good for bands like placebo, that do not really change their style...
