For me, it would be something like this:

NIGHTLIFE 1997-1999
From "Sail Away" (recorded October 1997) to the last b-side recorded ("Lies" 1999)

RELEASE 2000-2001
From the first Chris Zippel session in March 2000 ("London" / "Somebody Else’s Business" / "Positive Role Model") to the last song recorded for Release ("I Didn’t Get Where I Am Today" in July 2001) What do you think???
It won't be FL 2000-2001, since the album was released in 2002. So even if all songs were recorded in 2000 and 2001, the name will be FL 2000-2002. I would include PopArt bonus tracks too, actually. Transparent was recorded in 2001. IDGWIAT is from the Release sessions, and We're The Pet Shop Boys combines well with the other Zippel-produced tracks.
I see your point with FL 2000-2002. Maybe the demo of "Flamboyant" was recorded on 2002 and therefore might be included. As for the rest of the PopArt songs ("Flamboyant" "Miracles" and "We're The Pet Shop Boys") weren't those recorded on 2003? If any is included then the album should be called FL 2000-2003.

Anyway, I've made a tracklist with what might be included (recording date order and additional producer if any)

What do you think?

NIGHTLIFE 1997-1999
1 SAIL AWAY [10/1997]
2 IT'S NOT UNUSUAL (Studio version for the Stonewall Equality Show) [10/1997]
3 IT DOESN'T OFTEN SNOW AT CHRISTMAS [11/1997]
4 JE T'AIME… MOI NON PLUS [5-7/1998]
5 SCREAMING [9-10/1998]
6 FRIENDLY FIRE [10/1998 - Craig Armstrong]
7 FOR ALL OF US [10/1998 - Craig Armstrong]
8 LOVE LETTERS [11/1998 - David Morales]
9 NIGHTLIFE [11/1998 - David Morales]
10 I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT... (the psb extension) [11/1998 - David Morales]
11 SILVER AGE [3/1999] 3:35
12 THE GHOST OF MYSELF [5/1999]
13 CASTING A SHADOW [8/1999]
14 LIES [1999]

This compilation is barely 1 hour long, so they can add a couple of demos from this list:

Hedonism [11/1997] 3:06
Something Special [11/1997]
A Little Black Dress [4/1998]
Buggered If I Know [4/1998]
Before My Time [4/1998]
Playing In The Streets [4/1998]
Tall Thin Men [5-7/1998]
What Would I Know? [5-7/1998]
Unbelievable Scenes [5-7/1998]
Love And War (2nd demo) [5-7/1998]
Frangalis [8/1998]

RELEASE 2000-2001/2/3?
1 SOMEBODY ELSE'S BUSINESS [3/2000 - Chris Zippel]
2 POSITIVE ROLE MODEL [3/2000 - Chris Zippel]
3 LONDON (genuine piano mix) [3/2000 - Chris Zippel]
4 HOMOSEXUALITY [4/2000]
5 KITSCH [5/2000 - Peter Rauhofer]
6 BREAK 4 LOVE (UK Radio Edit) [5/2000 - Peter Rauhofer]
7 BETWEEN TWO ISLANDS [9/2000]
8 SEARCHING FOR THE FACE OF JESUS [9/2000]
9 HOME AND DRY (Ambient Mix) [11/2000]
10 TRANSPARENT [11/2000]
11 SEXY NORTHERNER [12/2000]
12 CLOSER TO HEAVEN (Slow Version) [2/2001]
13 HERE (psb new extended dub) [2/2001]
14 I DIDN'T GET WHERE I AM TODAY [7/2001]

Again, there's room for one or more of the following demos:

Nine Out Of Ten [4/2000]
Out Of My System [9/2000]
It's Just My Little Tribute To Caligula, Darling! [9/2000]
K-Hole (demo) [9/2000]
7/4 [9/2000]
Motoring [11/2000]
Only Love [11/2000]
Satisfaction Guaranteed [11/2000]
Love Life [Can I Be The One?] [11/2000]
Run Girl Run! (1981 Post Apocalyptic Nightmare Remix) [11/2000]
Limbo [12/2000]
My Night [1-2/2001]
Mid-life Crisis [1-2/2001]
The Night Is The Time To Explore Who You Are [2/2001]
All Or Nothing [Diddly Squad] [3/2001]
You’ve Got To Start Somewhere
Run Girl Run! (Original 1971 Version) [7/2001]
Flamboyant (Demo) [2002?]

Really, there should be no Closer to Heaven demos at all on the Release disc as one of the whole points of the Release sessions was that it was a calming cleansing experience that was completely opposite to the flamboyance of the Nighlife and Closer To Heaven tracks.

That's why I'd suggest that the Nightlife FL would run until 2001 and would include "Friendly fire", "Nightlife", "Positive role model" and the other unused/unreleased demos. The Release disc could then run from 2002 until 2005 and include "Miracles" and "Flamboyant" along with the unreleased single version of "No time for tears".

But what you propose is impractibable because, as you know, the Further Listening discs are put together with B-sides, mixes done by the boys and "something extra", which means that you can hardly create a single disc with b-sides from NIGHTLIFE and RELEASE, let alone include mixes and additional demos.

I haven't included CTH demos in the tracklistings either as I think these deserve a separate disc with all the demos from those sessions.

Motoring, Only Love, Love Is A Catastrophe [Demo] and Home And Dry [different lyrics] should be included in the Release FL disc. They were from the "Nov.2000 Demos CDR" and have other Release tracks on the demo CD.

I doubt that many of the C2H demos will appear on an official release. We will probably only ever have the ones that have already been offically released.

But the Release songs were recorded mostly in 2000 (see post above) so it should be 2000-(whatever)

And as for the demos for "Home and Dry", "E-mail", "Love is a catastrophe", etc... I'd rather they didn't release those as they are quite close to the final versions. I want to listen to some unheard tunes instead.

Danimal wrote:OK, here is my tracklisting so far for a potential Fundamental Further listening CD:

1. Bright young things
2. Flamboyant (demo)
3. Miracles
4. Flamboyant (PopArt version, trainspoters may prefer the single version, but I think the album version is a better mix)
5. We re the Pet Shop Boys
6. (single mix of a Potemkin track if one is ever released)
7. (maybe Psycho instrumental, maybe not...)
8. Fugitive
9. In private
9. I m with stupid (PSB Maxi-mix)
10. The Resurrectionist (extended)
11. Girls don t cry

Am I missing anything? It would be cool if at least one track per remaining single was an old-school extended track like The Resurrectionst!
No no 'Bright young things' should be a single!!! Not just an unreleased track on further listening...
