They have NOT stated that Numb will be a single.

Numb is NOT single material and is unrepresentative of the album.

There are FAR better tracks they could release in its place.

So why 'should' they promote a song they have NO INTENTION of releasing as a single? Has it occured to you that perhaps they 'should not' bother promoting a song which is as dreary, tiresome and un-single like as Numb when they are not going to release it as a single?

I hardly think appealing to MOR power ballad fans is going to do them any favours.
i think numb is one of the best songs on the album, it was great live, performing it promotes the album and if PSB agreed with your silly review, they wouldnt have saved it from PopArt and put on the new album. i think it would do well as a single , especially a US only single

jamie1978 wrote:How exactly does Numb fit well on the album?

Fundamental is, in general, a fairly dark 'state of the nation' album with some excellent PSB songwriting in evidence.

Most of the songs are very much a social/political commentary - fear, paranoia, abuse of power etc.

Then there is this second rate MOR power ballad called Numb in the middle - it does NOT fit at all, its completely the odd one out. And, its a dreary load of shite.
Excuses is not about the State of the Nation neither is Casanova (although the fear aspect is slightly well.) The orchestral fell sits well and it is just as depressing it is about how all the fear etc makes you want to hide away - heard the news, all teh madness etc, wants the world to leave me alone - similar theme you just need to look closely for it.
It's gonna be alright.

Thank You, Goodnight

I know every post needs a bitchy response so your reply is appreciated, but to answer the question:

There has been rumors/conjecture/discussion for weeks regarding Numb being a likely next single. Look it up.

Lucas.
Yeah, rumours from people who know abosultely nothing. There is NOTHING official to suggest it will be the next single, and it is highly unlikely to be given the more attractive options of songs like Integral.

A USA only single? You really don't have a clue do you. The Pet Shop Boys havent had a hit single in the USA since Domino Dancing went Top 20 in 1988. And you really think something as second rate as Numb could possibly change that? Forget it.

A distincltly average MOR power ballad released by what many US fans consider a 'dance' act will go down like a lead balloon.

Also, Fundamental hasnt even been released in the USA yet. When it does, it will flop no matter what they release beforehand to promote it, because the PSB's are a completely spent commercial force in the USA. However, they have a formidable reputation in the dance/club scene, and one they should rightly be proud of and foster.

Lest we forget, they are officially the fourth most successful dance act in the USA of all time.

I'm not a fan of anything particularly by the Queen of Power Ballads, and to be perfectly frank if you sat me down and forced me to listen to a power ballad (God forbid), I'd probably choose Aerosmith over this - as would 99% of the public who like that kind of music.

The last thing the Fundamental campaign needs is for Numb to be released - especially after regaining fans with two excellent single choices preceeding it.

Anyway, this is all relative - if Minimal doenst push Fundamental back up into the album chart, there will be NO third single. Fact.

Hiya

there's a Sodom and Gomorrah t-shirt available at the merc stall. The official site says, and I quote:
"'The Sodom and Gomorrah Show' is already proving to be a favourite with audiences"

I shall be very surprised if Sod+Gomo is not the next single.

As for Numb...
I can't help thinking it can't have been written for the Pets, can it? The way Neil's voice sounds when he tries to say "Wanna" instead of "Want to"... tee hee!

They've written so many strong songs themselves for "Fundamental", and the novelty has definitely worn off "Numb" by now if they had it lying about since PopArt. I can't see it released as a single.

The Nightlife and Release tours featured all their respective singles, if I remember correctly.

Lucas.
I believe the main reason not to include "Numb" in the setlist is because this song has many orchestral arrangments. You can't perform this song without a big orchestra (at least the Fundamental version). And, of course, they prefer to perform their own songs (overall if they have to perform famous versions of no-PSB songs like Always on my mind, Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you) and Go West).
Maybe that's the reason why all the Fundamental ballads were not performed live on this tour? They should be able to do "Casanova in Hell" anyway though! On the other hand, "Left to my own devices" also features a big orchestral arrangement, and that was pre-recorded...

"Of course it's all on tape, but no one will find out..."

....first off, who the f*** are you? what "clue" do you have? Numb is written by the songwriter behind numerous hit singles in the USA. i'm not a great fan of most of her work, and was surprised PSB would record one of her songs. I heard her demo and thought it wasnt anything special, HOWEVER... i stand behind my opinion that PSB could have a hit with their great version of Numb. the live version was even better. its Ok ot express your opinion , but get off the soapbox, its ONLY your opinion.

you have no special knowledge of upcoming single releases. you stated a couple of times there are NO plans to release it as a single. i havent read anything about it NOT being released as a single. It's more lilkely to be released, given the fact the Numb didnt air as part of the BBC show.
A distincltly average MOR power ballad released by what many US fans consider a 'dance' act will go down like a lead balloon.
actually if you reall listen to it, there is nothing average about it. stranger things have happened. Boy George had a solo hit with The Crying Game when many thought his career and hits were over.
Also, Fundamental hasnt even been released in the USA yet. When it does, it will flop no matter what they release beforehand to promote it, because the PSB's are a completely spent commercial force in the USA. However, they have a formidable reputation in the dance/club scene, and one they should rightly be proud of and foster.Lest we forget, they are officially the fourth most successful dance act in the USA of all time.
good thing they dont take advice from "fans" like you. its on itunes in the US and will be released in stores shortly. so far there's no news of a US single, but that could change at anytime. with the right promotion no band is a
completely spent commercial force
. i think releasing a new album with a second set of dance mixes is quite a smart way to foster their reputation on the dance scene. if you were more aware of the american market you might know that bif record companies dont give a shit about the dance scene.

I'm not a fan of anything particularly by the Queen of Power Ballads, and to be perfectly frank if you sat me down and forced me to listen to a power ballad (God forbid), I'd probably choose Aerosmith over this - as would 99% of the public who like that kind of music.
niether am i, but i think this a great song based on PSB/trevor horn's production. thankfully 99.9999% of the public are not as negative as you.
The last thing the Fundamental campaign needs is for Numb to be released - especially after regaining fans with two excellent single choices preceeding it.
another opinion disguised as fact. i hope it gets released somwhere as a single just so i can picture you plugging your ears and pulling you hair out.
Anyway, this is all relative - if Minimal doenst push Fundamental back up into the album chart, there will be NO third single. Fact.
how/where did you hear that when your head is so far up your ass?

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, "Numb" was part of the BBC radio show. it wasn't featured in the live broadcast on the 'net, but they did play it. it was on the website as an individual track alongwith After All, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk, and DOTQ.

yes , i know. i thought it was possible that it was cut from the show because it will be released as a future single. (i know it was available as a seperate track) . it would be nice for bbc to air the complete show, unedited as an encore

Or at least it would be, if any of the mixes were good enough to be played in clubs.
