Pet Shop Boys. Extended.

#1 Post by herts101 »

I'm creating a compilation of the "main" 12 inch mixes of each PSB single release, excluding the Bobby O releases and keeping to one mix per single.

With the earlier releases it's a bit easier as there's generally just one obvious extended mix, but once you get to 'Very' and beyond it becomes more complicated and I've generally chosen the mix that's most vocal heavy and sounds most like the original (i.e. extended rather than remixed). It does become a bit subjective though.

Are there any changes you'd make?

CD1: Please & Actually.
1. West End girls (Dance Mix) 6:31
2. Love comes quickly (Dance Mix) 6:50
3. Opportunities (Shep Pettibone Mastermix) 7:18
4. Suburbua (The Full Horror) 8:55
5. It's a sin (Disco Mix) 7:39
6. What have I done to deserve this? (Extended) 6:49
7. Rent (Extended Mix) 7:06
8. Always on my mind (Extended Dance Version) 8:13
9. Heart (Disco Mix) 8:27

CD2: Introspective, Behaviour & Discography
1. Domino dancing (Disco Mix) 7:41
2. Left to my own devices (Disco Mix) 11:27
3. It's alright (Extended Dance Mix) 8:47
4. So hard (Extended Dance Mix) 8:47
5. Being boring (Extended Mix) 10:36
6. Where the streets have no name (Extended Mix) 6:44
7. How can you expect to be treated seriously (Extended Mix) 6:03
8. Jealously (Extended Mix) 7:54
9. DJ Culture (Extended Mix) 6:52
10. Was it worth it? (12 inch remix) 7:12

CD3: Very, Alternative & Bilingual
1. Can You Forgive Her? (Rollo Remix) 6:00
2. Go West (Mings Gone West 1st & 2nd Movement) 10:13
3. I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing (Extended Nude Mix) 7:49
4. Liberation (E Smoove Mix) 12:26
5. Yesterday when I was mad (Jam & Spoon Mix) 9:20
6. Paninaro '95 (Pet Shop Boys Extended Mix) 7:32
7. Before (Classic Paradise Mix) 7:56 - went with this purely because 1st on CD
8. Se A Vida E (Pink Noise Mix) 5:37
9. Discoteca (PSB Extended Mix) 7:02
10. Red Letter Day (PSB Extended Edit) 5:35 - not sure about this v. Motiv8 12'' Master Mix, but this one allows them all to fit on one CD except Somewhere.

CD4: Nightlife, Release, PopArt & Fundamental
1. Somewhere (Extended Mix) 10:53 - bit of a cheat since it dosen't appear on the UK releases but no proper extended versions did as far as I'm aware.
2. I don't know what you want but I can give it anymore (Peter Rauhofer Roxy Anthem) 10:30 - again, not a UK release but I don't think the Morales and Maddkatt remixes sound enough like the original song for this kind of compilation.
3. New York City boy (The Almighty Definitive Mix) 6:31
4. You only tell me you love me when you're drunk (Brother Brown's Newt Mix) 10:00
5. Home and dry (Ambient Mix) 5:25
- I Get Along missed as there is no extended mix -
6. Miracles (Extended Mix) 5:42
7. Flamboyant (Tomcraft Extended Mix) 6:26
8. I'm with stupid (PSB Maxi-Mix) 8:12
9. Minimal (tbc)
10. tbc

I would change this for the 1992 12" mix.

You're right. Should have said Discoteca (I've edited my post).

2. I don't know what you want but I can give it anymore (Peter Rauhofer Roxy Anthem) 10:30
that doesn't sound anything like the original mix.

I listened to all the mixes of this I've got today and thought this was closest in style and melody to the orginal mix, but I agree it's not very similar.

Maybe I'm being biased because I like it. What would you choose instead?

I rejected this one because it wasn't on the actual release, but since I've broken that rule later on I might swap them over. The 1992 mix is better anyway.

I would use the PSB extension mix myself. Again not on the UK release but I think it is a better 12" version.

Aside from the album or 7" mix i like the morales 12". rauhofer mixes - his mix for angie stone aside - leave me cold.

I would definitely put Djculturemix on, as it's the definitive mix and actually makes the song pretty good.

Im in sort of agreement until CD3 which I would change to..

1. Can You Forgive Her? (MK Remix) As much as I love the Rollo mix, I get a bit bored of the same mix. The MK mixes never really get talked about and IMO are very underrated.
2. Go West (Original 1992 12" Mix) Superior Original version than any of the other remixes, although I do particularly like the Farley & Heller remixes.
3. I Wouldnt Normally Do... (Extended Nude Mix) Only as we are going for vocal mixes, otherwise its the Grandballroom Dub for me!
4. Liberation (E-smoove 7" mix) OK, its not an extended mix, but theres no way Im listening to that 12 minute drivel of the Extended Mix
5. Yesterday, When I Was Mad (Jam And Spoon Mix) Class
6. Paninaro 1995 (Tin Tin Out Mix) Never liked the PSB 12"
7. Before (DT's After Mix) Too many mixes of Before were done IMO but Tenaglia saved the best til last
8. Se A Vida E (Mark Picchiotti's deep and dark vocal) Again, never really spoken about but I like it!!
9. Discoteca (PSB Extended Mix) Agreed
10. A Red Letter Day (Autoerotic Decapitation Mix) Ace!!

9. Heart (Disco Mix) 8:27

I would use the Dance mix. That one just sounds better.
4. Liberation (E Smoove Mix) 12:26

Would replace it for the 7'' mix as it has some vocals
5. Yesterday when I was mad (Jam & Spoon Mix) 9:20
Replace it by Coconut 1 12'' mix

2. I don't know what you want but I can give it anymore (Peter Rauhofer Roxy Anthem) 10:30
I would go for the PSB extended mix

I did this job too time ago...;) If you want to stay the closer as possible to the originals, I'll suggest some changes:
CD1: Please & Actually.
.......
3. Opportunities (Shep Pettibone Mastermix) 7:18
use the Original 12" Version (from the 12", not from the Further Listening CD)
CD3: Very, Alternative & Bilingual
..........
4. Liberation (E Smoove Mix) 12:26
5. Yesterday when I was mad (Jam & Spoon Mix) 9:20
..........
7. Before (Classic Paradise Mix) 7:56
As Ronald suggested, the E-Smoove 7" and the Coconut 12" can be better choices...full vocals on both versions.
And for Before, by far closer to the original, the extended version is the "D.T.'s After Mix"...
CD4: Nightlife, Release, PopArt & Fundamental
1. Somewhere (Extended Mix) 10:53 - bit of a cheat since it dosen't appear on the UK releases but no proper extended versions did as far as I'm aware.
2. I don't know what you want but I can give it anymore (Peter Rauhofer Roxy Anthem) 10:30
3. New York City boy (The Almighty Definitive Mix) 6:31
4. You only tell me you love me when you're drunk (Brother Brown's Newt Mix) 10:00
The Somewhere extended mix appears on UK releases!! It's on Bilingual Remixed (the limited edition bonus CD)
For I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more, you must use the PSB Extension, no doubts about it!
For New York city boy, I also think the Almighty mix is the best, but closer to the original is the Morales Extended...
And for Drunk, maybe the Hitmakers Extended is the best choice...
This is not my signature.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'll definitely change to the following:
Go West: Original 1992 12 inch
I don't know what you want: PSB Extension Mix
Yesterday when I was mad: Coconut 1 12''
Liberation: E Smoove 7'' (as you say it includes more vocal and also allows space for Somewhere on CD3)

I haven't heard the following so need to do some Ebay searching:
Before: DTs After Mix
New York city boy: Morales Extended Mix
Drunk: Hitmakers Extended
DJ Culturemix

Some questions for Oznerol:
- Is the New York city boy Morales Extended Mix you refer to the same as the Morales Club Mix?
- Is the Drunk Hitmakers Extended the same as the Brasil Extended Mix?
- Is the Opportunities Original 12'' Mix the same as the Orignal Dance Mix (6:45) on the 12'' of the 2nd release of Opportunities?

Thanks again. Have spent far too long looking at this but I'm sure it'll be worth it!!
