Pet Shop Boys, Fundamental (* * *) out of four

With self-styled Svengalis and a complacent public threatening to make pop a four-letter word, it's up to defenders of the faith such as this dynamic duo to give the genre its dignity back. How many other acts could veer from the percolating wit of The Sodom and Gomorrah Show and I'm with Stupid to the elegant bathos of Luna Park and I Made My Excuses and Left?
