What's the Ultimate PSB's song ???

#1 Post by britboy »

Hi, now my discussion is about pin pointing the utilmate PSB song.

If The Beatles ' Yesterday ' is still seen 40 years later as ' thier ' timeless classic, which song would that apply to in regards to the Pet Shop Boys ?

Please pick only ONE song, none of this ..... or maybe this, could this etc,etc !!

My Ultimate PSB song is : ' Being Boring '

The reason is is that it gave me goose bumps the first time I heard it, its not with the familiar upbeat rhythm ( so maybe seen as a risky single release ), Neil's voice is brilliant, showed the boys were happy to stick two fingers up to thier critics and not take themsleves too seriously even though the song has a very serious mood and most important it hasn't dated and can be played for years to come and still be thought prevoking....... from the masters of upbeat pop this shows the depth and talent of real craftsmen.

Now start sending those opionions, curious what other peoples choices are ?

Best regards,

Britboy.

Go West is the song that most people know when you tell them about PSB - and I am talking about the international fans

Obviously (commercially) it is West End Girls. However Being Boring is their ultimate song for me.

Among the fans, Can You Forgive Her? seems to be a popular choice.

I think it's a prime example of everything fantastic about Pet Shop Boys: A wonderful tune set alight by a powerful, over-the-top arrangement with Neil delivering an excellent vocal performance. The lyrics are brillantly shaped - the narrator describing the difficulty of accepting his homosexuality, yet the sentiments of choosing between passion and sense and the feelings of nostalgia for early love encounters are recognizable to everyone. To top it off, the lyrics feature a defining couplet in the PSB canon: "She's made you some kind of laughing stock because you dance to disco and you don't like rock". Don't we all know it?

The song itself is brillant as described above. Adding to that, it came out at a time when many people feared that Discography was the end of the line for PSB, thus re-igniting the spark of fandom for many, including me, and the video, of course, introduced a whole series of magnificent and inventive visual expressions which put them firmly in the public eye again.

The fact that Go West became such a big hit and partly obscured the track in the eyes of most non-fans only serves to heighten the sense of something really special in that track. At least for me.

Other than that, Being Boring is a strong contender of course - brillant lyrics and the whole atmosphere of the song beautiful. The music is a bit generic though which means that for me it fails to reach the absolute heights of PSB brillancy.
It was a cough that carried him off. It was a coffin they carried him off in.
