6 months on - how do you rank Fundamental?

#1 Post by Joemoz »

Enough time has passed to make a proper judgement on Fundamental's merits as compared to previous PSB albums. With Release, many people ranked it reasonably high at first, but changed their minds substantially after the first romance was over.

So how do you rank Fundamental among the PSB albums now?

Mine would be (proper albums only, and not including b-sides and extra discs):

1. Very
2. Behaviour
3. Bilingual
4. Introspective
5. Actually
6. Relentless
7. Please
8. Nightlife
9. Fundamental
10. Release

But then again, I was never too impressed with Fundamental to begin with. Too many boring ballads and all in all only a few songs really worth listening to. The cream of the crop, of course, relegated to b-sides and bonus CD's.

So for me, I think Fundamental has slipped one place at most, I might have put it ahead of Nightlife earlier, but it isn't even close to that now.

Sorry if there's already been a recent one of these.

Fundamental is the best and I don't have to hear the earlier onces anymore, besides the Kevorkian mix of Rent.
And Concrete of course.

I was thinking about this last night, and I honestly put it like this

Behaviour
Please
Bilingual
Fundamental
Very

The others I can't really order, although Disco 2 is obviously last.

I think it is still much too soon. But at the moment I rank it top 5 although I think this will drop over the years. It might take 10 years to fully judge this...remember how we now feel about Behaviour compared to back when it was first out.

Fundamental is surely 'somwhere in the middle'. Not as good as Behaviour or Very, better than Bilingual or Please. Just... middling.

Currently, Fundamental comes next to Behaviour, Bilingual and Introspective - for me, it's number 4th. Still play almost every evening and still enjoy!
"I think it’s an amazingly good album, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s one of the albums I feel most proud of. But for people who don’t really know us, and have a sort of an idea about us, ‘Electric’ is more what the Pet Shop Boys are meant to be."
(Neil Tennant, speaking about "Elysium" on the eve of "Electric" release.)

1. Fundamental
2. Introspective
3. Actually
4. Relentless
5. Very

This is not including Disco 1 and Alternative, which I find rather brilliant too, but are compilations of course.

I didn't really change my mind ever since I posted my last PSB album chart.

Behaviour still leads (almost unbeatable), ahead of Very. Fundamental is still at #3 for me, followed by Nightlife and Bilingual.

Fundamental was supposed to be a return to the 80's wasnt it? Only 1 song sounded 80's to me and that was 'I'm With Stupid'!
