870,000 world wide sales was what i was told in September by a local radio DJ. Take that as you will.

Dave

So after asking for UK sales and getting no responses of real worth (except Dave) and the shite that boystrange spouts, I took it upon myself to do some thorough research. (OK, I slept with someone from EMI!) Figures are approximate:

UK - 80,000
USA - 30,000 (inludes import sales pre official release)
Germany - 95,000
Scandinavia - 60,000
Benelux - 35,000
Spain - 40,000
France - 10,000
Russia - 50,000
Italy - 10,000
Australia - 15,000
Canada - 20,000
Austria/ Switzerland - 10,000 total
Eastern Europe (incl. all former Yugos, former USSR, Hungary, Poland etc) 80,000
Japan - 30,000
Africa - 30,000
Asia (excl. Japan) 30,000
Indonesia - 10,000

635,000

That's as many territories as I could get my hands on. Add in all the missing places and Daves friend at a radio station might be right with 870,000. Wonder who he slept with???

80,000 copies sounds v. respectable to me, an improvment on Release and hence stopping the trend of falling sales.
Cheers for those figures, I'm presuming they're accurate, they certainly LOOK it, and you got a shag to boot. Well done.

Good work. Is your head hurting?

The guy that told me is trustworthy enough. He wouldn't waste his time bullshitting ( i dont t think!) You can probably add a few more copies to that total as it was a few months ago. Even i bought 2 copies today for cheap stocking fillers! At 4 quid, you can't really go wrong.

Very good job. Thank you Kim.

I guess when you add Latin America and Mexico sales (where the Boys are highly popular), the figure must be around 800K and above.
The CELL by Stephen King instantly hit number 1 in New York Times Bookseller Lists selling well over 200 thousand copies in three weeks. This affirms my opinion: People really need an occassional good horror read...

Than you very much for the great job Kim!!!

One question: are these good results for the Pet Shop Boys? I have no idea...

Well if the sales (around 870k) are accurate then it is quite good for the PSB of today.
Having in mind that Release sold around 900k in now 4 years Fundamental should at least reach the 1 million mark and so outsell Release in the future.

In comparison to their other albums of course these figures aren't very good.
Even Nightlife sold more than 1.2 million copies back then (maybe around 1.5 million up to now?)
And all the others sold way more than that of course.

Thanks for your clear explanation tenlow! Ofcourse we don't know what EMI/Parlophone had in mind concerning the Fundamental sales... Maybe Fundamental is already a HIT for them, who knows!

Call me stubborn, but I absolutely REFUSE to believe it sold 35.000 in Benelux and only 10.000 in France.

Benelux has approximately 27 million inhabitants alltogether. France has 60 million.

The other way around (Benelux 10.000 copies, France 35.000) would be way more likely.

About comparing to other psb albums sales: keep in mind that overall record sales have gone down with almost 50% last 7 years (probably because of internet piracy). So the results are quite good by todays standards.

Yeah, but the French are way more anti-English than the Benelux countries.

In Benelux, they love us for freeing them from the Nazis; in France, they've never forgiven us for it.

According to Geowaynes site, Fundamental had mid October sold 29.000 copies(Soundscan figures)So i presume it´s fair to say that it must have sold more than 30.000 by now, even excluding import sales.

All their albums post VERY have sold atleast a million around each..Do these figures include digi download counts as well ?

I doubt they would be making albums if it were commercially viable to recover costs !
Left to my own devices, I probably would...
