Covers Album

Apologies up front if this is an old topic.
I was listening to Soft Cell the other day, namely the 12" of Torch and I thought what would PSB do with this track. It could be very PSB. Any other thoughts from fans re potential covers which PSB could record.

I don't want PSB to do covers at all. They did more than enough. And I wish they would get rid of that horrible version of Where The Streets Have No Name during their current tour. I heard the song way too often and I'm really starting to dislike it.

I prefer PSB doing their own, great, unique material. Let others cover PSB, rather than PSB doing an Erasure-ish cover band. *yuk*

Funny how "Always on my Mind" & "Go West" have been two of their biggest hits.
They add their own techniques to a cover & make them totally different from the original...Hardly Erasure-ish!

That's exactly what Erasure are doing as well. You can't have heard many of their cover versions.

I don't mind PSB doing the occasional cover (though I am also tired of Where the streets have no name), but I prefer them to write their own material for the most part. Nothing wrong with taking a good song and making it their own, as they have done many times in the past.

To answer the original question, I don't think 'Torch' would make a very interesting cover. If they were to do a Soft Cell cover (which I doubt they would since they are musically similar already), I think perhaps Bedsitter or Soul Inside would be better choices.

I like them to do covers of songs that aren't that well known or at least somewhat forgotten like Go West or Homosexuality.

I also would rather have new material,but if they wanted to do covers I would like them to do themselves. ie redo some of their own songs in a different way.

like say liberation with acoustic guitars, put that supposed rock version of luna park on also, or maybe that upbeat dance version of drunk, or maybe an upbeat dance version of decadence.

that kind of concept.

I typed a bit too quickly. I meant to type: Erasure-ish cover album. Erasure did an album full of covers.

Always on my mind and Go West are indeed great covers that differ from the original songs and IMPROVE them. Streets is a joke worn very thin. I'm really fed up with hearing it played live during PSB tours again and again.

I don't mind a cover version once in a while, as long as it is remarkably different from the original, but I wouldn't like the PSB to do a whole album of covers.

Actually the only covers I love are It's Alright and Try It.

Anything else is forgettable IMHO, including the huge hits Always On My Mind and Go West.

I also hate U2, but actually I think that "Where the streets..." is PSB's best cover. The reason is that it goes so well together with "Can't take my eyes off you". I can't hear either of the songs without thinking of the other, and that's thanks to PSB! It was absolutely genius to combine those two songs. It definitely took this average U2 song to another level. I don't like the original version, but I love PSB's transformation of it.

But hey, wouldn't anyone do a U2 song better than U2 themselves?

Enough with the covers, too many bands doing covers. They should just stick with originals and that is it. The U2 cover was good, I know that U2 did not appreciate it. Whether we hate U2 or not, that is not the issue. I do not hate U2, as they have done nothing wrong to me. I am just not into their music. Too many people using that word HATE around here way too easy. Nobody can really hate a band, as the band have done nothing seriously wrong to any one of us here. To say that are just are not into them or we do not like them is a better way of saying it.

I absolutely HATE U2 for their attitude. I can't believe Bono interrupted Sanremo Festival years ago to ask D'Alema "Drop the debt" toghether with that i***t and Cannabis-addicted Jovanotti. He and his band pose as sort of politicians, when they should only care about music. That's what a band has to do IMHO.

I hope they retire as soon as possible. I can't believe they named an album "How to dismantle an atomic bomb"...that's disgusting to me, really

I cannot hate U2 for 2 reasons: "In A Little While" (one of my favourite songs ever) and "Achtung Baby" (one of my fave albums ever). There's plenty of their stuff that I dislike and my opinion of Bono ranges from "total t***" on bad days to "well... let's not be cynical once and believe at least he tries to make a better world" on good days.

But anyway, back to subject: I'd LOVE to hear a covers album, provided that their choices are surprising...
so something in the spirit of Bowie's "Pin-Ups" or that Grant Lee Buffalo guys'"Eighties" = boring!
something like Tori Amos' "Strange Little Girls" or Ferry's "Dylanesque" = maybe not always great but very interesting!

I used to think covers were b-side material at best, but there's been quite a few great ones in recent years!
