whateverman42 wrote:Nobody's heard of the PSB. I get asked of my favourite band and reply as such, and usually get a 'huh?' But my friends have heard them due to them being trapped in my car, and they dislike them. I'm completely affirm in the belief that who or what you like is dependant on the context.

Example, I go off on my friends for liking crap bands, and so when they hear my music forcibly, naturally they wouldn't be as accepting of it as they would if the PSB were playing when they were annointed King of the World or something. Then they'd attribute PSB to a good feeling and be more open to the band. As a result, I try to be as open as possible to all music but even I'm susceptible to such ideas, it's just human nature. So sadly, I don't think anyone I'm associated with will ever 'get' the PSB, and I'm doomed to walk the earth alone, inevitable, inevitably...
That's the reponse I've been getting from people over here at Easter when I told them I was going to see Barenaked Ladies

Never been a problem to me admitting to being a PSB fan. But I think that's cos I'm a girlie. My other half likes them (not as much as me) but when we got together it was only PSB cds that we ended up with duplicates of! I have caught him denying liking them at various times (even to me). But he had a great time at Thetford last year and seems happy enough to be coming along to Wolves with me ... not sure who he's told he's going though

I have many comments said to me about me liking certain groups, PSB on occasion. Alice Cooper I'm also into - all I get is - is he still alive? Right Said Fred- people just laugh in my face, I met the guys recently and they are so nice. I'm proud of liking all the above groups, people just don't understand my passion.

My friends, family and collegues knows, that i like the boys. The 1st reaction is : Do they still make music ? What was their latest hit ?
But when i say "Yes i like them and they are still great". The most people give in and say "Yes, they had some hits i remember". And them comes the GO WEST things. :D
Yesterday a collegue told me that he like "Suburbia" very much. Cool song, i said. :)
Did you ever walk on a stormy night...

I tell people exactly what i think & who I like.

I absolutely love The Pet Shop Boys & always have & I never hide the fact... why should I ... they have the best pop sound around in my opinion ( their sound will never go out of date & Im sure that there are many acts out there who wish that they could manage to even write one successful track not minding the huge number of successful tracks that PSB did write )... I also love Robbie Williams & that is not considered cool either.
At the same time I also like U2 ( being Irish I would say that ) ... but people should never be ashamed of who they like or dont like.....so be brave & stick up for them...
I have friends that I have found in their pessession CD's that they would never claim to have.... these are the people who have a problem as far as I am concerned... two faced with no guts..... 8) 8)

Tessa,

While I agree with everything you say about The Boys, you are clearly not a single male
living in the suburbs of Australia (or many other places).

We do stick to our principles, but understand, its harder for some.

But I like your spirit.

Maybe I'm just middle-aged, but I don't give a shit what other people think of my musical taste. I live in Texas, and I can't stand hip-hop, especially the current variety which dominates the airwaves here, so that means I'm out of step with what younger folks are into. But I like lots of new stuff that they've never even heard of. And I know a lot of gay guys (like me) that LOVE PSB.

Be proud of who you are...a PSB fan!!

Gregf.....If life was fair , then that should not be the case....

Im' the dont give s**t type but then again I dont have to put up with any aggro over whom I like & dont like because my friends & work colleagues are not that much into music anyway ( with the exception of one who is a Bob Dylan...Eric Clapton fan but at the time time appreciates that everyone has different musical tastes ).My friends like to watch too much TV ... I dont... I like to listen to good music ...

PSB & RW will be around for a long time to come for us to enjoy.... they are not ' Fly By Nights' like a lot of the pop rubbish out there at the moment......I dont need rubbish that depresses me & that has no substance to it... you cannot say that about PBS & RW.... I will always love them & tell as many people as I can about them......

BTW.... Any idea when PSB are doing another album..............

Ha, Barenaked Ladies, are they popular anywhere other than Canada? Even here they're down the tube.

In response to ridicule, noone should ever have to justify their taste. People that build themselves up by tearing others down are quite simply close minded and stupid. It's easy to say and agree with, but when you're getting ridiculed by a bunch of people in the heat of the moment it's hard not to relent and make excuses. 'Oh, I only like them cuz... it's stupid, I know'. It's all about fitting in, and if you feel forced to, you should take a look at the company you keep. Everyone has a different personality, some weak in some aspects and strong in others. For those that get intimidated, just remember that you like who you like for reasons you're comfortable with, and if others can't accept it, they're in the wrong, not you. Again, easy to say...

Barenaked Ladies... Did they have some connection at one stage to Stephen Duffy of The Lilac Time... I am not too familiar with them... but the name rings a bell somewhere in my head...Why are they down the tube in Canada..... all music goes through cycles... have they been around a long time... even so... the good ones always last.... smaller audiences maybe but audiences that really appreciate the music & thats the main thing.
As far as relenting & making excuses... NOT a good idea... .Just stand up for what you believe in... you dont have to always fit in & if you feel pressurised to deny something just to fit in , then those friends are not worth it. Friendship & relationships are all about accepting people for what they are & not for what you want them to be.

They're just a weak rock band that have been around a while and are considered somewhat as legends by the Canadian music industry. They've had a couple big hits going back in the years(you may know that song that goes 'if I had a million dollars', and One Week). In reality they kind of suck. Boring, bland, inoffensive pop rock, whose recent albums haven't produced any radio friendly singles and albums that make nary a dent.

Tessa ... it was me that bought up Barenaked Ladies. I went to see them at Easter ... they are actually better than ever live, but that's by the by. But the reaction I got from people in the UK when I mentioned them was the same that whateverman gets in Canada when he mentions PSB. Since BNL are from Canada it was a bit ironic. I'm not in any way suggesting that BNL are better than PSB. Just an observation on reactions to bands.

Mentioned at work last week that I was seeing PSB again next month and got "Oh Pet Shop Boys, my daughter used to like them". That's the general kind of response, nothing too dismissive, just treated as though I'm living in the past a bit!

Sorry about the mix up... but no one died ... so its ok.

The PSB have been around for a long time so not everyone nowadays appreciates them... my sister who is older than me always loved PSB so that is where I first got to listen to them & I adore them. I beileve that if they brought out some of the records now that they had many years ago that they would be a hit even with young people today... New York City Boy... how can you resisit that track... even Scissors Sisters are heavily influenced by PSB.
PSB's Pop Art Video is absolutely brilliant & is very much with it... songs like Rent... Red Letter Day .. Jealousy ... Go West are all brilliant & will never go stale... we just dont hear enough of them ...
I hope that they bring out another album soon... Im sure that they will as they are constantly working on new material... Are you going to see them in Canada... good for you if you are... i would love to see them live... . They are coming to Ireland in the Summer but I believe that the tickets have sold out.. so maybe better luck next time...

If you like Barenakedladies.. then good for you ... keep supporting them...
I am a big fan of Robbie Williams ... but he is not flavour of the month at the moment in the UK press but that does not stop me from supporting him.. he is a fantastic live solo artist... one of the best out there... his album Sing When Your Winning.. is one of the best.....

I saw BNL at the Birmingham Academy last month and will be seeing PSB in Wolverhampton this month. I'm not from Canada

I think there are still tickets left for Ballinlough castle ... but they are a bit pricey (depends if you like the other acts!) Hope you get to see them soon.
