Pet Shop Boys on the Finnish charts

#1 Post by Riikka »

There's a new book released covering the Finnish charts from 1972 until May 2006 called Sisältää hitin (by Timo Pennanen).

The following picture shows PSB chart placings. Just wondering what became the final placing for Fundamental?

"It's a sin" is mentioned as the biggest of all hit for the year 1987, "Always on my mind" as the 6th biggest and "Domino dancing" as the 8th biggest hit for 1988, "So hard" as th 14th biggest hit for 1990, and "Go west" as the 3rd biggest hit for 1993.

Would you mind to explain what all numbers and symbols mean? What does the 'b' mean and what are the three numbers behind the singles?

Also: why are the first three singles from Very listed as 'EMI' releases?

For the albums; I suppouse that 6vk means six weeks in the top chart while the bold number the highest position in the chart for that CD. Is it OK?

8) I didn't know this is so interesting! Here are the explanations:

B = UK # 1 single/album
b = UK Top 10 single/album
U = US # 1 single/album
u = US Top 10 single/album

The weeks ("vk") indicate, how many weeks that album has spent on the charts.

The first album column:
K = compilation album
R = remix album

The second album column indicates the highest placing of that album on the charts.

The third album column indicates how many weeks the album has spent as number one.

The "buttons" for the singles have been collected from the "Rumba" magazine, for a quick view of the most successful hits.

The first singles column indicates the highest placing on the Jukebox chart (1975-89) or on the Top 50 (from 1992 onwards).

The second singles column indicates the placing on the singles sales chart Top 20.

The third singles column indicates the placing on the radio chart.

Well I must say I'm seriously impressed with that chart history! Seven #1 singles and, apart from Love comes quickly, every single up to and including SAVE made the top 10! And Domino Dancing spending 7 weeks at #1 is extraordinay! Now I understand why there are so many Finnish fans around the forum!

One more statistic:

The most successful foreign artists on the Finnish charts 1/1972-5/2006:

1. Madonna
2. ABBA
3. Queen
4. Bon Jovi
5. Bruce Springsteen
6. Michael Jackson
7. Boney M.
8. David Bowie
9. Metallica
10. Celine Dion
11. Pet Shop Boys
12. Roxette
13. U2
14. Dire Straits
15. The Rolling Stones
16. Iron Maiden
17. ZZ Top
18. Tina Turner
19. Whitney Houston
20. Eric Clapton

In the 80's, Pet Shop Boys are the 5th most popular artist on the charts.

I do't know if there's anything surprising there, as I don't have other countries' charts to compare. But the Boys did it quite well in Finland!

Looking at the chart statistics, that is true, but it must be taken into acoount that Bilingual and Nightlife were autumn releases while good chart positions are harder to achieve.

Why is that, by the way? Are people more eager to buy records in the spring/summer or just before the Christmas??

The biggest releases are usually released during the spring and the autumn. January is usually the slowest month for album sales, followed by the summertime. The month before the Christmas is the busiest time. Remember: in the UK Fundamental sold 28 000 copies during its first week and PopArt about 30 000 copies, yet Fundamental charted at #5 and PopArt at #30.

I think one of the most popular PSB songs in Suomi is Suburbia.
I heard it many times on the radio Nova... :?
