Real gems on "Nightlife"!

#1 Post by singysingysingy »

I just got the "Nightlife" cd a few days ago and I'm surprised how good it is actually! I only knew and liked the singles, BUT..."Radiophonic", "For your own good" and "Closer to heaven" are soooo good and maybe better than the singles from this album. I think it's a crime not one out of these 3 were singles! WHY?!?!?!?
Are there official remixes of "Radiophonic", "FYOG" or "CTH"?
For sure "Nightlife" is an album which didn't get the attention it deserves. Great songs!!

I quite like The Only One, Drunk, I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more and Closer to Heaven. Dislike album version of New York city boy, although live it sounds well (especially 2004/05 live version).
"I think it’s an amazingly good album, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s one of the albums I feel most proud of. But for people who don’t really know us, and have a sort of an idea about us, ‘Electric’ is more what the Pet Shop Boys are meant to be."
(Neil Tennant, speaking about "Elysium" on the eve of "Electric" release.)

I must admit-I never really liked "New York city boy" and still don't. Too much "Village People" sounding for me. One of the reasons I never got close to "Go west" while both work very well live.

Everything except "The Only One", probably the worst song they ever made.

All three of these tracks seemed to be seriously rumoured to be a single at some point during the Nightlife campaign, as did Happiness Is An Option. Neil revealed that if there had of been a fourth single it would have been Closer To Heaven. They recorded a special Slow Version of this track for a free CD given away with the Sunday Telegraph, which is based on one of the versions of the track they produced for their musical of the same name. It's a great version.
Woof.

That Sunday Telegraph cd was send to the members of fan club also. It was great as us, non-brits, wouldn´t have got a hand on it otherwise.
The best songs on Nightlife are: Radiophonic, Boy Strange, New York city boy and Footsteps. :D

The worst thing about this album is the damn sleeve. Whoever designed it should be shot!

Closer to Heaven is great. I seem to remember that there is also an different version of Closer to Heaven on the Closer to Heaven (musical) demo cd (sung by Neil). And of course there's the musical version of Closer to Heaven sung by the cast.

Yes, there's a demo version of Closer To Heaven, which actually sounds much better than the final album version. Same goes for The Only One, by the way.

I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more was the worst PSB single choice ever and helped to ruin the potential of Nightlife in advance. The REAL singles on the album weren't singles: For Your Own Good, Happiness Is An Option, Closer To Heaven and perhaps Radiophonic.

The Only One is so good, probably too good to be a single.

Loved I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more

Radiophonic was average

Boy strange was odd, which may have made it a great single in retrospect.

New York city boy very commercial and too much of a Village People retread- unnecessary

Radiophonic, Vampires and You only tell me you love me when you're drunk are my favourites.
