Suming up the past year...

As the Fundamental Tour and Era comes to an end let us reflect on the year that has passed (all Bow) jokin'. When May 2006 came excitement came all over the PSB community as the almighty Fundamental album was released. Fans only got a taste of what was to come with the release of I'm with Stupid, many called it a brillant pop song, many calling it a return to form, (personally I thought it was a great track) others quickly disregarding it with it's annoying "Oh oh" and Neil's laconic vocals. A great single and album track however singing live was a completely different matter. Charting at Number 8 in the UK and charting quite respectively in other countries especially Canada (no. 4 WTF?) many opened Fundamental with open arms.

Then the dreaded minimal was released. Personally I don't like it, the basis of the song is chanting MINIMAL which i find lazy (no offence Chris and Neil) However the video made was quite good, lived up to the song's name, minimal also we see Neil and Chris in nice light! THey don't look fifty! Hurrah! Then the Fundamental toured kicked off, Critics praised the tour calling it a success then Numb was released (Shudders) The Album version was better, wasn't suprised when it charted @ 23 (I thought worse....34 ..ahem)

The following year rumours spread about a possible Integral release, Integral... I think is a fantastic song, reminiscent of Go west, OTT instrunments, Nice chord changes I love it! Then online stores started giving Cat information on the single and wait for it....... Disco 4! ....Eyes lit up on the forum, THen the dreaded comfirmation came from the Official Site.... Doh!! You know the rest.....

It has been quite a ride for this album. A really big tour in support of it. Have the boys toured this much before?

Where do I begin! I bought the releases and the book and......etc. but this has been an amazing year in terms of my travelling to see this tour. Saw so many places and met many new and old friends. I spent money too of course but when will we ever see the likes again ? Who knows. Some of the places I visited starting from last June (I won't include London) are Oslo, Paris, Chemnitz, New York, Boston, Ludwigslust, Thetford, Brighton, Nottingham, Newmarket and a few more. I've had the handshakes, the photo (with Neil), the hellos and also the disappointments (Hogmany,Edinburgh). There have been tears and laughter and long boring Journeys but I'd do it all again. It's not over yet....there are a few dates left

Having seen them last year and then twice this year, its been fun being able to see PSB all these times. I saw them three times last year.

Its been a watershed year for me and PSB.
I finally, after 20 years, got to see them live (3 times in a week) and 3 different experiences. It was also great seeing others in my home city who are as nuts about PSB as me. I'm not alone after all. Meeting other forum members in Sydney was cool too. Hi, ya'll.

Release wise:
Fundamental - awesome album that delivered several of my all time favourite PSB songs. I'm still reeling that people didnt 'get' Minimal. I love Numb, Integral (a secret gem for those who bought the album and the best 10 minutes of my year hearing it live 3 times) I Made my Excuses & Indefinite Leave (the Behaviour style songs I'd been longing for) and Psychological (the perfect electronic vibe I love from PSB) and Fugitive (just brilliant)

Life In Pop / Cubism - great DVDs
Catalogue - an absolute treasure
Killers remix - opened my ears to that band
She's Madonna - a wasted opportunity from a crap video.

I could care less about chart positions as I've had more than enough PSB this year.
Roll on the next 12 months and more great stuff.
D4? Mmmm - perhaps its not for us, perhaps its a blip, who knows, but I'll buy it for the collection and Integral extended version.

Fundamental is a fantastic album; their best since Very. The bonus-cd Fundamentalism is a great addition and I also love Concrete. A Life In Pop is a lovely DVD and the Cubism DVD is also great.

In retrospect, I'm With Stupid wasn't the right song to promote this album with. Integral would have gotten more attention. Despite the poor chart result (which I partly blame to the tracklisting), I still consider Minimal a great single choice.

The mutilated radio edit of Numb was the most horrible 3.30 minutes of PSB music I ever heard. I never want to hear it again, I can fully understand why it didn't reach the UK Top 20 and in the future, I rather have NO singles than mutilated edits of songs.

What saddens me about Fundamental is that YET AGAIN the full commerciall potential of a PSB album isn't used. Integral and The Sodom And Gomorrah Show, the two most hit potential songs on the album, aren't released as singles. And let's not even start to talk about Fugitive.

Disco 4 would have been a great opportunity to release a version of Integral after all... A videoclip was shot, a new remix was made, enough bonus tracks are on the shelves, but no... - the bloody thing only appears on Youtube. The effect will be nearly zero. That said, I must admit that a collection like Disco 4 is basically un-promotable.

And, oh yes, I forgot: I was so happy to see She's Madonna at #2 in the Dutch charts. It's great to see a Pet Shop Boys produced and written tune do so well in the Netherlands and getting massive airplay!
