It would help no end if a referee gave a free kick and explained why he gave it. Talking to the players would reap more respect. The problem with that could be that a lot of refs haven't played the game and struggle to explain situations. They don't realise that being a tenth of a second late could look like a bad tackle, when it was a genuine attempt for the ball.
