So sorry to hear, Fugi.

My heart goes out to all who are laid off just now.

One trick I did in IT was to learn a bit about a new software product
on the computer at home. Then when some crisis (read opportunity) came
up at work "Who knows anything about ...", I could say "yeah sure" and
bluff my way into being the expert who saved the situation.

Putting in a bit of effort in our own time, and being ready for an opportunity, pays off.

Helloooooo.

I'll join in with this "merry" crew of jobless punters.
As of Jan 1st I have indeed been unemployed, for the first time in my life! After 8 years working with the same company. :(
Then again, this should come as no surprise to anyone who's heard news of the state my country is in these days...It's been getting progressively worse for months now. :/
Hopefully I'll find something sooner than later that at least pays enough to cover the bills, but I'm not very optimistic, to be honest.

Damn recession. It all had to come to an end some day, didn't it? Pfft. :P

Ok, I haven't been laid off quite yet... but my company is looking for us to take 1/2/3 year career breaks, or cut down to three day weeks, or work a week on/week off. If enough people don't volunteer for these options, then it's redundancy time.
Meanwhile, my husband's job is finishing up before the end of March.

Thanks Fugitive. Hope you get something soon - the hotel/bar industry is in tatters here too.
Emigration is on the cards for us I'd say.

i've still not found a job, not without trying. i can afford to make one more payment on the mortgage and then its time up. Me, my wife and our 3 little girls are going to lose our home. i am utterly defeated. never missed a mortgage payment in 7 years! i truly cannot beleive that we are going to lose our beautiful home - mostly i feel sorry for our girls who will lose their lovely pink bedrooms and the garden they loved playing in and their playroom that i converted from the garage last year! its so awful. i feel like curling up into a ball in the corner and crying my eyes out for a year!

  I don't know what to say, I really feel for you.
What does your bank have to say about the payments, surely they can't repossess after just one missed one ? I thought the government had stipulated they must give a longer period to give people time to sort out their finances ? Explore every avenue available to you with the Citizens Advice Bureaux, your bank and welfare, I really hope it comes good for you soon.

The government were supposed to be launching some sort of project to help people in Canveyboy's situation. I don't know much about it but it's worth looking into. I also doubt that they will re-posess you for missing one payment (if thats the case) I know of someone recently who was £3,000 in arrears. He had to pay it off in full though.

It maybe also worth considering renting your home out if you can find somewhere else to live. Even if it's for 6 months. At least it's still your home.

Good luck and i hope things get better for you and everyone else on here thats in the same boat.

I can't think of anything worse Canveyboy. Don't give in, fight to the last, talk to your bank. If your are out of work, does the government pay the mortgage interest for your house, and leave the capital? That's what happens in this country, don't know about situation in yours. You could maybe negotiate with your bank to take a mortgage break or just pay the interest for a while.
Sorry if you've already explored all these routes, I certainly don't mean to be patronising.
If the worse comes to the worse just try to remember that these are all just material things, you have each other. All you really need is food in your belly and the shirt on your back. Everything else is a bonus.

ugh I'm so sorry to hear these storys! I hope the government comes thru for all of you in the meantime so you can keep your heads above water till you get something else.

as far as caneyboy like muscle mary said I like to think a deal can be made somehow..I mean this isnt the time people are buying lots of houses, you would think they would want to make a deal with the people already living there.

hey, thanks everyone. well, the mortgage advisor from Nationwide is going to phone me on Monday to arrange a meeting at my local branch. Hopefully they might entertain the idea of letting us change our mortgage to an interest only repayment mortgage. Or something. I just pray that they are prepared to throw us a lifeline....

thanks again for all your support. good luck to everyone who's in the same boat!

Steve.
