Wow, just juggling my memory of recent exchange rates, I'm pretty much getting raped. My old slow EDGE iPhone cost me US$70 a month, and I fully expect my new 3GS to go up to US$100 a month, - plus $15 to deactivate my old one, and $15 to activate my new one in a one-time fee. Ain't capitalist monopolies grand, in a country that can't shut up about "competition in the marketplace!" and other drivel?

O2 has the monopoly on the iPhone here. I think that's the way apple prefer to operate. I should say that mine is the cheapest tarrif and I don't get many free minutes of calls or texts, but I don't care as I use the internet for the majority of my communications, even with family and friends. It was the unlimited data that helped persuade me to get an iPhone over other smartphones.

I also paid AU$400 (£195) up front on that deal.
And like FunnyUnc my plan is low cost, high call charge.

Strange. We have so many monopolies here but iPhone is supplied
by 3 or 4 top service providers.

Funny Unc is that a Carl Sagan quote ?

I paid up front for mine, too. Less than half the price of buying one on Pay as you Talk though.

Yes it's Carl Sagan. I originally added it during the debate about whether rationalism leaves room for wonder and creativity in the Trever Horn thread, but I really like it so I've left it for now...

just got my iphone 3gs - had pc problems so pain to set up but now it is up and running it really is a great bit of kit- gotta cancel my T mobile contract now. Amazing with o2 I actually get a signal where I live

I finally got an iphone

2G though :p got a refurbished one off ebay and a friend who was returning from USA to india. got it for $200. Though the back place was dented and scratched

right now the only thing that is buggging me is that i cant get it to connect to the internet via USB connection. i researching and i cant seem to tunnel into my iphone without its ip address, which cannot be got unless i connect it to wifi (which i do not have

Hi Vince.

The iPhone only has two network interfaces,
the 3G(or 2G) interface and the WiFi interface.
You can't network thru the USB connection to a PC.

The latest OS version 3.0 allows tethering where
a PC can get to the net via the 3G(or 2G) interface.

It's not hard to get WiFi if you have an Internet
service. Use a WiFi router or add a WiFi card
to your PC.

Attention : iPhone and iTouch OS 3.x users.

I recommend you do NOT upgrade to OS 3.1 at this stage. (27th September 2009).

There appears to be a significant bug in 3.1 that causes the iPhone to
crash at least once a day. The symptom you notice is that you go to use it
and it is shut down and you must reboot it. I am getting this at least once
a day since upgrading to OS 3.1 from 3.0 a few weeks ago.

It may be more prevalent in 3G 16Gb models but that just may be because
there are of lot of those around.

Apple is not acknowledging there is a problem at this point in time and there is
a lot of silliness going on like getting iPhones replaced.

I have noticed more than once the back of my iphone was very warm, so I think
it is a bug in some part of 3.1 that chews up CPU cycles and/or causes a memory
leak eventually crashing the OS.

I think this is too big not to get fixed pretty quickly. So just sit tight and there will
an update to 3.1 like 3.1.1 or something available in a week or two.

Downgrading to OS 3.0 is probably a good workaround but appears not to be officially supported.

And If you are on 3.0 stay there for now.

Hi greg, thanks for the info on wifi. i need to get a router, but i'm managing nicely with my unlimited (yet crappily slow)GPRS connection

and am NOT upgrading to 3.1 unless it has some upgrades for the 2G as well

AND, does anyone here use Cydia? :s am having a few timed out, host not reachable and POSIX errors while updating

tried googling for solving it, but with no success

Exactly. The next model will probably be able to do that.

Apple do indeed rape you for simple functionality.

The iPhone is only now getting up to speed with simple functions (in terms of sending pictures and video recordings) when compared to a phone 2 years ago which could do these very things.

(I own an iPhone by the way)

I hope you avoided the problems with 3.1

Anyhow, after a month of denying there was a problem,
and the topic getting to 150 pages in one thread on the Apple forums,
they have released a fix, OS 3.1.2

I have loaded it up ; lets see how it goes.

It's in iTunes if you want to try yourself.
Just connect your iPhone or Ipod Touch in the usual way.

Just FYI, the iphone in Italy is supported by 3 different mobile phone companies. My hubby bought mine unlocked for €500 (it was my bday gift in 2008) but I only have a plan that gives me 50MB a day of internet for €10 per month. It works very well for me and I think I do loads with my iphone but I never run out of bytes.
I will not upgrade to 3Gs until mine breaks. And I hope it's not going to happen anytime soon.
I am pretty excited about the iPad. Yes it may seem like a bigger version of iPhone, but I'm too curious and excited about the fact that the chip is made by Apple. It's the A4 I really want to check out. Also I wanted a kindle, but iBook seems so much better and can do so much more from what I've seen in videos, so I think I'll buy an iPad but I'll prob wait for the 2nd generation.
