Mick Karn (ex-Japan) appeal

"With great sadness we regret to inform you that Mick has recently been diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer. Mick is currently in positive mood and undergoing further tests and treatment. His family and friends are close with him, supporting him in practical ways, and surrounding him with their love, friendship and care.

Mick has been struggling financially for some considerable time now and we are hoping that this appeal may help to raise funds for any necessary treatment and perhaps go some way towards providing a small degree of financial support whilst Mick's immediate family provide the care and comfort we would all wish for him. We are hoping that his friends, fans and musical colleagues will, over the coming months, offer any support they feel capable of giving. Quite aside from the sheer brunt of daunting medically-related costs, Mick's clear and major concern is for the security and well being of his wife and young son.

This is going to sound awful and it is not intended in a nasty way, but whilst I obviously feel sad for Mick and his situation, I really don't like to see people try to cash in on their fame or former fame in this way when 'normal' people in similar situations have to struggle by.

True, but normal people's friends try to help out in any way they can too. This isn't something he had planned for.

I am so sad to hear of Mick's illness. I was a huge fan of Japan - bought all their records and saw them three times live, etc.

As that was clearly a thinly disguised personal pop at me, I suggest you re-read my post. I am very sorry to read of his situation and wish him well, but I dislike such public appeals for money based on previous fame. I make this comment as this isn't the first time I have seen an ex famous person put out an appeal like this.

I have had more than enough serious health issues in my lifetime. On more than one occasion I have had to survive on a pittance from the state whilst I had other serious issues to worry about, but I couldn't put out appeals to fans because I am not, nor have ever been, famous. I just find that side of it unfair.

I thank you for clearing that up. Of course I wish Mick well even if the 'advanced' terminology doesn't sound too good.

Cancer is a horrible disease, only varying in it's 'horribleness' by what kind of cancer it is, and how early it was detected. I couldn't ever wish it on my worst enemy.

Unfortunately it's a very bad case, he probably won't live for more than a few weeks. Met Andy Bell tonight who was at the launch event for the "Like A Freak" album by Furiku (which Karn plays on). Really nice guy and I hope he'll encourage others to help out.

Anyway, one of the reasons Karn is hard up is the financial management of Japan, who had one main songwriter and who signed some disadvantageous record deals as teenagers. Karn was only 22 when Japan split up, and although he has played with some of the biggest musicians in the world, and has released solo work on a regular basis since the 80s, he has not written any big hits so doesn't have a regular income to live off. He may be due some overdue royalty payments and a couple of his musician friends are I believe trying to get those sorted with the companies concerned.

Advanced cancer usually means the cancer is in more than one area - that's it's moving to other organs. It's not a good prognosis but each cancer is unique to the individual.

My thoughts and payers are with Mick and his family.
