Lets not forget about the number 1 synthpop duo from America...Hall and Oates. From wiki: Critics Stephen Thomas Erlewine and J. Scott McClintock write,[1] "at their best, [Hall & Oates'] songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them by incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock." Sounds like the boys having strong hooks and melodies that adhered to strong synth/dance traditions without being a slave to them by exploring side projects and different instrumentations.

Reviving this because I'm interested to know whether people feel that if you went up to a stranger on the street right now and said "Pet Shop Boys or Hall and Oates?" whether they'd genuinely know who you were talking about with H&O?

I suspect that more people know of PSB (even if they don't listen to them) than H&O. H&O claim is they're the most successful duo (in sales) in the world. Is that actually true any more, because I have to wonder if PSB couldn't be too far behind them now if not surpassed?

The old “Erasure vs Pet Shop Boys” conversation is a little boring. They’re completely different.

My take is this though…

Erasure have the best “One Track”. The one that would get fans, casuals and non-fans up out of their seats, no matter who you are…and that track is “A little respect”. When that song starts, everyone erupts. It has a bigger effect than “It’s a sin”, “Always on my mind” “Go West” etc…but…other than that, the Pet Shop Boys back catalogue and output is far superior (in my opinion).

Anyone disagree about the “A little respect” point? It is an absolute banger and seems very very very popular with all of the casual electro fans I’ve ever been with.

Maybe in the UK but here in the US Hall & Oates are the best selling duo of the 80's. They were MASSIVE here and their concerts still draw people out to see them (well the concert tours may stop now that Daryl Hall is suing John Oates -- and rightfully so). They had 29 top 40 hits here in the States, 16 of which were top ten hits.

As a non Erasure fan I have to agree. It's 100% an iconic track. "Go West" is probably (or maybe Always on my mind) the closest crowd pleaser to that and both are covers, so really PSB don't have that one track like Erasure do.

I was at one of those silent discos on a cruise ship last year, with two DJs competing against each other and an electro playlist to be the most popular channel everyone there danced and sang along too. 'A Little Respect' got everyone nudging each other to switch channels and listen in, and the dozens and dozens of people there were all singing along. I always loved the song, but never realised how universally loved it is by both young and old.
