Fair point but half a ton of bomb making substances have been recovered and i think it's safe to say they weren't processing it to help grow their sunday dinner.

I have to agree with Undertaker here.

The death penalty is a philosophical dilemma which has troubled society for decades but I think the world has changed so much that some people are only worth 'terminating'.

And I use the word 'people' with some reservations.

Oh yes, without doubt, because no one should be allowed to have that much ammonium nitrate fertiliser... Unless of course they were planning to grow some cannabis! ;)
Nothing bad happens? What if those "suspects" were arrested based on gossip and just really knew of nothing, I'd call that pretty bad. I wouldn't want to live in country that acted like that.
not as bad as hundreds of innocent people getting massacred - imagine the uproar if the security services decided to not do anything because they weren't 100% sure something was going to happen, but then it did

I thought the role of the Police is to PREVENT crime as well. If theyve thwarted a major terrorist attack, then they should be praised for potentially saving the lives of innocent people.

I doubt very much whether the police would arrest those people without plently of hard evidence that they were planning something. Didnt they find bomb making equipment etc.

I'm vehemently against the death penalty.

How can a sovereign, democratic state be responsible for ordering the termination of human beings, no matter what they've done.

There's been too many miscarriages of justice in the UK to ensure it will never be brought back.

Those found guilty and sentenced to life should be made to suffer a harsh austere prison regime and life should mean life.

LOL.
*ahem* I'm sorry.
I can see many farmers hiding their fertilizer as we speak...

true.
But what about the "IRA members" who just happened to be Northern Irish blokes walking around town at the time an IRA bomb went off...

But well done MI5 or MI6 or traffic cops or whoever (it always astounds me how many really big criminals are found on the basis of a traffic violation... I find it hilariously ironic) for preventing something.

Rags -- I don't know what country you reside in, nor what your total "close to home" knowledge of terrorist caches and the lethal results of such things.
However, from what you say above--- I'd say it was little or none at all, judging by your flippant remark.
If I am mis-interpreting what you said, then I apologise. ---

Any one hoarding or hiding parts of what can become a lethal explosive item, deserves the harshest punishment that is available. ( In fact, it's a pity they don't manage to accidentally kill themselves without harm to innocent by-standers)IMO

Having lost friends to IRA and 'real IRA' activities. Have lost friends and have maimed friends from The Admiral Duncan nail bomb. I have NO qualm about saying that who so ever plays a part in anything of that nature such be removed from society, dumped on remote island and left there to 'survive' or die ! IMO

was this a specific incident, but agree with you re: people often get targeted just because of the way they look, speak etc. It is understandable that people with Irish accents would get picked up though as most IRA members do (I presume) speak with an Irish accent; it's a generalisation but the police in the aftermath of such an attack would have to arrest anyone under suspicion you can't let people go 'cause chances are any guilty party ain't gonna hang around. It should just be expected that anyone arrested should be treated with respect until their guilt/innocence is proven

Yep... But I've forgotten the details.
I think five members of the same family who had nothing to do with it whatsoever were arrested and put in jail. One old man died there, another man started a hunger strike and eventually the trial got to appeal and they were released, after .... I don't know how many years.

Bloody hell, a serious post.

I am inclined to agree but there is something about these freaks.

I am pro-Palestinian - I think that it is terrible what has happened to their country - and I would say the vast majority of people concur.

I am also proudly Generation X - whatever that is - in that I think the world power structure is seriously f*cked up.

But these freaks go around bombing Bali and Madrid in the name of what?

I just reckon that they're not human and consequently should be treated as you'd treat superfluous waste.

It's not revenge or punishment, it's just like burning rubbish.

these miscarriages of justice, and the Police corruption, falsifying of evidence is the reason why we cannot have the death penalty in this country, although I presume miscarriages of justice are common everywhere. It has to be said that sometimes when people are released on appeal they are not actually being proved innocent, the process by which they were convicted was at fault and the evidence was not there to convict but they were still guilty- the case quoted does sound tragic though

Indeed, it was, lest we forget, the UN, aided by the US, who gave in to future Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin's threats of jewish terrorism, and authorised the creation of the State Of Israel out of a country called Palestine. Bonkers.

what makes the Palestininan situation even worse is the fact that hardly any of the Arab countries do anything to make the situation better and their supporting of Hamas makes Israel more jumpy and beligerant. Rather than constantly blaming the West certain countries need to look in their back yard. The heads of organisations such as IRA, Hamas etc. also lose sight of the issue and have no desire for peace, hence the 'Real IRA' appearing after IRA announces cessation of violence, Hamas carrying out that bombing immediately prior to the signing of the accord between Israel and Palestine which would have begun repatriation of land - if there is peace these 'leaders' lose their status, power, respect, far easier to carry on sending people to their death after all they're not the ones carrying out the bombings
