Maybe you guys didn't have much of New Kids On the Block over there, but they were a "tweenies" groups. And Backstreet Boys were out before Spice Girls. Reality TV didn't hit the US until 2000 if I remember.

Take That was the British analogue of NKOTB. The thing about "reality shows" hitting the US later than in the UK and the rest of Europe ignores the fact that almost all of the reality shows that became huge in the US in the early 'naughts - American Idol, Survivor, etc. - were European imports. If, as Patrick Bateman wrote, it's a tiny step from Spice Girls to Popstars, it's not a much larger one from Spice Girls to Kelly Clarkson and then to a show like Glee. You could probably make a good case that the Spice Girls are the most important pop group of the last two decades. They're the Typhoid Mary of modern pop culture.

Wasn't MTV's "The Real World" in the mid-90's the first reality show that made it somewhat big? That was a US production. Likewise with MTV's "Making The Band" which was a precursor to "Popstars"/"Idol"/"X-Factor"/"The Voice"/et f*** cetera.

Yeah, The Real World started in 1993. Making the Band didn't start until 2000. Real World was popular but reality shows didn't become massive in the US until Survivor in 2000, which was the first reality show on a major network and the first one to become a ratings phenomenon. American Idol followed two years later and was the most watched show in the US for six years running (2005-2011).

Then I guess there is no downside at all about the Spice Girls existence: think about how duller the music landscape would have been without all this pop. Already like this we had so much rnb crap and hiphop!

Sounds like the mike malfunction was very well placed, her vocals seemed really bad when she was dancing like that (but then again, whose wouldn't be with that kind of movement). She should have just tossed the mike and focussed on the dancing. But what's with those trouser/leggings things being higher in the front than on the back? How do they stay up, and why would anyone want them so high in the front?
