Oh yes, without doubt, because no one should be allowed to have that much ammonium nitrate fertiliser... Unless of course they were planning to grow some cannabis! ;)
Rags -- I don't know what country you reside in, nor what your total "close to home" knowledge of terrorist caches and the lethal results of such things.
However, from what you say above--- I'd say it was little or none at all, judging by your flippant remark.
If I am mis-interpreting what you said, then I apologise. ---

Any one hoarding or hiding parts of what can become a lethal explosive item, deserves the harshest punishment that is available. ( In fact, it's a pity they don't manage to accidentally kill themselves without harm to innocent by-standers)IMO

Having lost friends to IRA and 'real IRA' activities. Have lost friends and have maimed friends from The Admiral Duncan nail bomb. I have NO qualm about saying that who so ever plays a part in anything of that nature such be removed from society, dumped on remote island and left there to 'survive' or die ! IMO
I have lost friends as a result of British army activity/ Government backed paramilitary activity, the former represent Britain and the latter are the elected representatives of the British people yet I don't call for the whole of British society to be punished.
It's always dangerous to generalize. There are bad, bad people out there, I am sorry for your loss and wish it wasn't so, but let's me more specific about who we talk about here.

not as bad as hundreds of innocent people getting massacred - imagine the uproar if the security services decided to not do anything because they weren't 100% sure something was going to happen, but then it did
true.
But what about the "IRA members" who just happened to be Northern Irish blokes walking around town at the time an IRA bomb went off...

was this a specific incident, but agree with you re: people often get targeted just because of the way they look, speak etc. It is understandable that people with Irish accents would get picked up though as most IRA members do (I presume) speak with an Irish accent;
The hell it is!!!!!!!! Society is in trouble when this ecomes acceptable. This is called arbitrary arrest and is not legal.

to clarify I am not advocating randomly arresting any Irish people who happen to be walking down the street we are talking about a specific incident, what do you seriously suggest people should do, not arrest any suspects unless they happen to be walking around with explosives in their back pocket. If a violent crime occured and the victim said the attacker was wearing a blue jacket and white jeans, if the police arrested three people fitting that description would you say that was wrong, and that they shouldn't have done anything if they didn't see them in the act and hope they could find them later. Whether you like it or not society is in trouble and in such an environment mistakes can and will be made.

when I went to America last year I was held and questioned by Security/Customs for almost an hour and it wasn't pleasant, they had no reason for stopping me, I hadn't done anything, it was a random check and being stuck in a small room with two armed blokes searching you ain't nice but it's a symptom of the world we live in

From definepsbs statement I cannot see there was an advocation of punishing a whole race/religion just those involved in terrorism

I believe you are missing my point from all my other posts, the last one I made was more of a joke based on what chemicals were found. I am not typing up my opinion now (quite frankly, I am too tired). But I was not condemning the fact that something was done by the police, I was however stating that the whole terrorrist thread seems to be quite a media circus with no proof. If someone is guilty, they should be punished.

Anyway, I reside close to Liverpool at the moment.

I accept that now, but if you read what you had written you appeared to say it was understandable that people with Irish accents would be arrested because most of the IRA would have Irish accents.
As for the next bit, I am as realistic as anyone about the security situation I just thought the judgement/logic in the above example was pretty poor and an example of how innocent people can have their civil rights effected.

Madrid suspects set off blast when corneredMADRID (Reuters) - Suspects sought by Spanish police in connection with last month's Madrid train bombings apparently set off an explosion when approached by police, an Interior Ministry source says.

An undetermined number of people were injured, including some police officers, the source said on Saturday. The source could not immediately confirm reports that one police special forces officer had died in the operation in the southwestern Madrid suburb of Leganes.

so no one caught those pictures of American bodies burned and mutilated hanging from a bridge in Fallujah then eh? That was pretty cool- front page of the NY Times. Those were civilians too by the way.

Thank you flaffer!

It appears there are several misunderstandings between many of us replying here. I am guilty of that too!
Thats the WORST thing about cold black type on a white page, the feeling, emotion and intention NEVER comes across they way one wishes it too!

My own words:
Any one hoarding or hiding parts of what can become a lethal explosive item, deserves the harshest punishment that is available. ( In fact, it's a pity they don't manage to accidentally kill themselves without harm to innocent by-standers)IMO

Having lost friends to IRA and 'real IRA' activities. Have lost friends and have maimed friends from The Admiral Duncan nail bomb. I have NO qualm about saying that who so ever plays a part in anything of that nature such be removed from society, dumped on remote island and left there to 'survive' or die ! IMO
Ist Paragraph : I do believe that ANY person who conceals, hoards and purchases materials with the intention of making explosive devices, or partakes in the making of the parts thereof--- SHOULD be given the harshest punishment. If that punishment is the accidental detonation of said explosive, which then kills it's maker(s) TOUGH! --- and please God or whoever that WE do not then make 'heros' of them!
Those caught and found guilty of taking part in anything like that ought to be taken off to a remote island and left there to 'survive' --- Slapping them in prison is (IMO) too good for them!

2nd paragraph : I used the example of IRA and The Admiral Duncan Nail bombing as EXAMPLES! If some one took that as an offensive or sectarian remark then i am very sorry!

I doubt that too many forum members live in such isolation that, at some point in our lives, we have NOT had some kind of bomb scare, terrorist threat (or worse) happen very near to us-- or a close friend or family member.
The unfortunate thing is that innocent people often become the 'victim' of police investigation --- better that than be an innocent victim of a bomb!!
There are those who say that a stop and search proceedure is an infringement of civil rights, that the 'authority' is picking on specific 'groups'. Yes I know that in some places the police do appear to pick out ethnic minorities --- BUT, if WE are innocent and have nothing to hide then what is the problem? The problem could be that in some countries those innocent folk may be thrown in jail, for no reason at all.
Yes that does happen. It shouldn't but it does.

I don't know what the solution is for all the trouble and wars in our world.
Does anyone? Do any of the Politicians and world leaders know the answer? I doubt it!
Governments make rules and legislation to attempt to keep the peace within their country. People break those rules!

Bit like this forum really, looking at the debate over the 'New Rules and terms of use'. What ever we do in our lives we are governed by a set of rules! We are, afterall, humans and individuals we may share common ideas and ideals but will we ever see this planet at peace?

You, the reader, might think I have wandered off the thread but :
How many of you, the readers, have children of your own? Or have young brothers and sisters? Perhaps neices and nephews or even a friend who has children??
How many of you, the readers, have bought or passed on toys to those children? Toys that are for 'play-fighting' like Action Man, mock pistols? Six-shooters, computer games where the main aim is to destroy the target, Conquer the Empire or what ever? Those are all games, but it seems that there is now a VERY small thin line between games and reality!

How many times have we seen news footage of children in third world countries carrying real guns and rifles? For them it is not a game, it's part of their life!
So what can we do about it?
Make some rules to allow people to search out information about other people, who may or may not be involved in some subversive activity! At which point some people will complain that those searches are intrusive and injust! It's like going round in circles and getting nowhere!

To say this is 2004 we seem, as the human race, not to have gone beyond the neolithic stage in many respects! ( IMO) i'll shut up now. Sorry!

It seems that while the UK has thwarted an attack, poor Madrid is still having AQ's bombers create havoc there.

Once again, I hope our fellow PSB Community members in Madrid are safe, and also their friends and family!

More bombings in Madrid  It would seem electing a 'New' Government has not been much different so far ! Which goes to prove that Terrorists might want to give a particular Religious OR Political excuse for their activity......but deep down these individuals are nothing but Criminals. They will find ANY reason to cause Havoc.

actually they blew up themselves this time (and a cop, unfortunately) to avoid being taken into police custody. Which I don't think is a very good sign... might mean there might be more stuff coming up and they wanted to avoid questioning....

You can't really blame the government for that I think.
Looking for love and getting nothing that's worth regretting.
