Really? I've never ever heard the word used in anything other than a derogatory context.
an old flatmate of mine lived in Australia for a year and a half and he said that he was shocked the first time that he watched cricket over there as the commentators constantly referered to the pakistani team as the Pakis , and he said that Australians abbreviate almost anything. I've only taken his word for it so apologies if I've got it wrong. A major problem from what I can see see is political correctness gone mad - when I used to go shopping in Ilford you often saw people on a Saturday/Sunday having displays in the high street relating to Palestine openly calling for the murder of Israelis and Holy war etc. nothing seemed to be done to stop this racism and inflammatory behaviour, if someone had called for the murder of Arabs, black people, Muslims the Police would, quite rightly, intervened and arrested people. By treating people with kid gloves the situation is going to get worse and worse.
