Up to 13 years of mystery and speculation nearly over....

#1 Post by daveid » Fri 14 Apr 2017, 4:59 pm

Within a week or two we will know the tracklistings for the FLs. We have been waiting for these from as long ago as the Nightlife reissue was promised in 2004, and it's been over two years since the Pet Text saying they were looking through old tracks. There's been years of expectation and guesswork as to what the tracks will be and we are about to find out.

Enjoy the last few days of mystery...they will never return!

What will be will be…It's not as if we have had nothing to keep us going for 13 years.

We've been waiting to hear "Love and War" since... 1990.
"It was a dark and stormy night."
"You know what's wrong with your stories? They lack subtlety."
"It was a sort of dark and kind of stormy night."

I'm not bothered either. I'm just saying the mystery will be over soon. It's a hell of a long time since the first FLs came out and I for one am very excited about this.

I can't wait for this. 11 of the greatest albums of my lifetime.

I'm not expecting new unreleased songs though. The most we got from the first six were demos of tracks recorded by other artists. The lions share of material we will already have.

I don't see why anybody with rational expectations will be disappointed - especially by the first six albums.

We already know their track listings - barring an unexpectedly positive reappraisal by Parlophone - so I think the default position for the first six albums is "as you were". Anybody building up expectations - as opposed to hopes - for a new set there is indeed likely to be disappointed. But then, they're being over-optimistic to start with.

As for the next five albums, unless bonus discs include instrumentals or the original album bonus discs (Fundamentalism, Yes etc., er, etc.) then surely these will be highly-prized additions to the catalogue. Indeed, there is an argument that these 11 reissues, the last two x2 albums, the Performance DVD and the Ultimate DVD is really all anyone needs to have a definitive Pet Shop Boys media collection. Everything else is, arguably, for specialists only.

Issue 24 of Literally included their rationale for including tracks as part of the Further Listening series:

Would only include tracks that were considered finished master recordings at the time, whether released or not

Would include their own mixes of PSB tracks, but not remixes made by other people

Sequenced in the chronological order they were recorded, rather than released

If there was more material than would fit they would remove those tracks seemed redundant, less interesting or they particularly disliked

Each bonus CD needed to constitute a good listening experience in its own right

They were uneasy about leaving off Relentless but deemed they didn't have space

They made an exception to consider the demos they'd produced for other artists as finished masters

I believe the Lisa and Dusty demos were in fact mixed for Introspective / FL 88-89. Not sure about Losing my mind

They say the only track they did further work on especially for the reissues was the demo of So Sorry, I Said.
