Video Remasters

#1 Post by Sage »

I'll be the first one to say it, they should remaster the music videos!!

It's a new trend now, remastering music videos particularly from the 80's.
Elton and A-Ha have done this to promote their live tours. PSB could do the same.

They're put onto Youtube. Brilliantly they can replace the existing upload in order to keep the view count.
I'll share some examples of remastered music videos.

Elton John - I'm Still Standing https://youtu.be/ZHwVBirqD2s
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) https://youtu.be/fpmTe3TDdVU
Eurythmics - Don't Ask Me Why https://youtu.be/rqrw3_604_c
Wham! - Last Christmas https://youtu.be/bwNV7TAWN3M
a-ha - Take On Me https://youtu.be/djV11Xbc914
Billy Idol - Flesh For Fantasy https://youtu.be/dw1oM7LBbxE
DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night https://youtu.be/cAQSZhazYk8
Janet Jackson - When I Think Of You https://youtu.be/EaleKN9GQ54
Lionel Richie - All Night Long https://youtu.be/nqAvFx3NxUM

(The 4K videos are more impressive than the 1080p videos)

Publishing 4K remastered videos generates headlines and makes the videos relevant for a new reason.

I am tempted to say please remaster West End Girls and What Have I Done To Deserve This? but really all of their music videos could benefit from a remaster.
The quality depends on the type of film originally used, so we can't predict how sharp it would be but I feel it would be worth it. (Where The Streets is fairly blurry)
Personally I'd love to see all of the music videos in crystal clear 4K quality. Why not?

Throwing the idea out there. It's a good way to promote and celebrate PSB.
For fans it's a way of re-visiting the videos in another context which I also like the idea of.

I don't think many of those videos, particularly from before the 00s, would have been shot with cameras capable to record 4K. Any improvements one mighty notice as a result of such "remastering", particularly where the videos were shot on simple VHS, will be just computer-generated visual details not what was actually shot back then.

I know! I've been dying for them to release such a remaster for so long! Did you all see the Wham! - Last Christmas one? Now THAT is a remaster. I am glad they haven't re-released their videos before, though, since 4K Ultra HD technology has only recently become available. I hope they remaster It Couldn't Happen Here, too. They announced they were working on that with the British Film Institute some years ago, but nothing came out of it.

By the way, this is my first time posting after at least a couple years!

That’s ace, thanks.

Do we think Jarman’s PSB work was shot on film?

And ICHH would have been, yes?

Much of the rest will be video, I assume.

This is a perfect video to ex'plain the situation and stop false expectations.
I don`t think that any of the PSB videos meet the requirements to have a REAL HD (even worst 4K!!) restoration, because even if some of them were recorded on film, the edition was made on tape for sure, full of video effects, cross fades, slow motions, etc..so the final masters are surely Standard Definition tapes, not HD films.
You can enhance the sharpness, touch the contrast and re-process the image to make it look different...but the original PAL PopArt DVD have a really great quality already (not as good as the transcoded NTSC DVD releases, as the UK originals were on PAL)

The only video that I remember that maybe exists in native HD is "Liberation"...because it was projected on big screens on some sort of virtual attraction..am I right?
And of course the "I couldn't happen here" movie (that includes the "Always On My Mid" video!!!! ;) ) and maybe "Projections" as mentioned above...

No music video shot before the mid-2010s was recorded in cameras capable of 4K, as such a technology did not exist until then! Most of them were shot in 35mm film, which can be scanned by 4K machines. That is how you can see George Michael and Pete Burns in 4K in these remasters.

Unless they have lost the original film rolls from their videos or they have been badly conserved, I think all of them could be remastered, except for Paninaro or Opportunities (the second version), which look like they were shot on VHS.

The most funny part would be the CGI videos from the Very era. Guess they would have to dig out the original 3D project files from Mr HG's vaults and re-render them onto 4K. A wee bit of work!
