Anyone drive a recent VW? SD card music query.

#1 Post by StevePSB »

And if so, do you play music off SD card?

If so, do you know what you need to do to get music playing in a track by track (or at the very least a folder by folder) order?

In the past I've tried to organise folders with numbers or letters in front of them, trying to second guess how the system judges order, but I can't suss it.

I'm running out of room on my iPod in the car, which is very much tied to my own particular track order, but if I move on to an SD card instead (I've got a 128Gb one sat doing nothing) I'd love to get it playing properly in my own order.

Any help gratefully received!

I had lots of problems like this with my old Skoda (VW made) but my new one from 2017 fixed the problem with ordering as there was a mode to use track meta data, rather than file name, which then worked just like an iPod.

If a modern VW then I would have thought the same. It very much depends on which head unit you have specified. Let me know, and happy to go out and look at mine again for you if similar. I tend to just play from my iPhone now so I can’t remember all the details.

One thing to be aware of is that there may be restrictions on SD card size and also SD card number of tracks, which cause problems with playing. That caught me out for ages!

2019 Golf with Discover (8" screen).

I last tried it, and couldn't understand it, on my original Golf - 2014 with Discover Pro. Since then I've been strictly iPod-ing it.

Sorry - never came back to you on this.

It sounds like you are currently showing tracks in folder view, rather than database view. This option is available to switch between at the top of the list of folders.

Once you’re in database mode, the display takes the track number from the metadata of each album, rather than filename which should solve your problem. It also looks a lot better than navigating via folders.

If the metadata isn’t right then this can of course be fixed in iTunes or a better music editor.

Let me know if there’s still a problem.

I had another go a couple of weeks ago as I've been making new files from my CD's and vinyl.

Whereas I couldn't understand how to get it to read in any logical order on my previous Golf, I've either stumbled upon the secret formula or they've changed the firmware so that it works more logically.

I've named the root folders starting with 01, 02, 03 etc. in order. I do that again in the sub-folders so that if root folder was 01. Pet Shop Boys (for example) then inside that folder it'd read 01. Albums and 02. Singles, with further numerically ordered folders inside those ones.

It reads the root folder 01. Pet Shop Boys first, plays the sub-folder 01. Albums (and its contents in numerical order) then moves on to sub folder 02. Singles (and plays those in order) before returning to whatever I've put in the root as 02 folder. And on and on. Just as I wanted it!

Thanks for answering, anyway!

I can sell my 60Gb iPod now. I've bought a 512Gb SD card so have no worries about running out of space at all! :)

Glad you’ve got it working. I’m sure the correct approach must be to get it to read the metadata, but sounds like it works so maybe leave it be!
