Episode 6 - Lyrically

We wind up season one of In Depth with a look at some of Neil’s favourite lyrical themes, or “Tennant's Tropes”. Graham then turns quizmaster to expose Chris’s lack of lyrical knowledge, before a final study of PSB album closers uncovers that, just like in Shakespeare, you’re never far away from a wedding or a funeral.

A personal message from Graham and Chris

Producing these podcasts has been quite a journey for the two of us. Making them was very much a learning process and we were nervous about “putting ourselves out there” and how they would be received. But we have been bowled over by the positivity and nice comments from fans around the world. Who knew what a nice place the internet secretly was? Or maybe it’s just Pet Shop Boys fans that are a decent bunch. Clearly the mention on the official PSB socials was a key moment for us and we are sure we will both milk our number one Apple music podcast status for many years.

Many people have already asked if we are planning to make any more. The answer is that we would love to. Clearly the podcast could run indefinitely and we have firm plans for at least another six episodes. But the first six were very much a product of circumstance. We had access to free studio time through Graham’s work, but that door has now closed. In addition, hosting costs are £100 a year.

So it is with some trepidation that we are once again testing the water. Today we’re opening up a crowdfunding page via GoFundme, with a target of £500. This will pay for:

* Two years of hosting across all main podcast platforms
* The equipment necessary to set us up to be able to record self-sufficiently, to a high quality, without the reliance on studio time or any third party

https://gofund.me/9439d154

We appreciate that some people may prefer to get something more tangible for their investment, so today we are also opening our In Depth online t-shirt store. There’s a range of designs, with all profits (approximately £10 per T shirt) going to support the podcast.

https://in-depth.teemill.com

Anyone kind enough to donate or buy a t-shirt will get a shout out in the credits of a future podcast.

Fundraising in this way isn’t ideal but it’s the only way we can think of to keep In Depth going, given we can’t afford to wholly subsidise it ourselves.

Another ask would be to head over to the Apple Music or Spotify apps and give us a nice review or follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/InDepthPSBPod

Thank you again for all your support to date; it’s meant a great deal.

I've still got a few to catch up on, but have been very impressed so happy to support your efforts. Think I'm the first to donate, and very much hope many more people agree with me and decide to do the same.

Thank you for all 6 episodes so far! Great listening, a few new nuggets for me, and many shared experiences over the years - so many times I have found myself joining in with the conversations! Made a small donation to hopefully help you continue

Thank you so much - we have been amazed at the response throughout the process of producing the podcasts, but the generosity of people to support us to keep them going has taken up another notch. It is very much appreciated!

I am late-ish to the party, but after finishing the series I wanted to find out more about Graham and Chris... and found my way here. I've often lurked here over the years, but have now registered for the first time so that I can share with the guys how excellent, intelligent, thought-provoking and just, well, good the series has been.
I've been a fan since 1986, escalating to huge fan in 1987 - but never had the good fortune to meet someone who I could talk to about, eg, the opening bars or Two Divided By Zero or the R1 sessions where they stood in for Simon Bates.
More please!

Hi David, thanks for the post, really glad you enjoyed the podcasts Image You can follow us on Twitter @InDepthPSBPod where we’ll let you know when more episodes will be available - we’re currently planning another six and getting some equipment together so we can record them ourselves, rather than in a studio. All being well the podcast will be back later this year. Thanks again Image Chris

Just to echo what Chris said, thanks for talking the time to write those kind words. We sound like kindred spirits and the lack of conversations that I have had over the last 35+ years is exactly why I wanted to create the podcast.

Hopefully you won't have too long to wait for more episodes. Once the summer holidays are over we can get back down to business.

Thanks for connecting - Graham

I've loved listening to the podcasts. I've always felt justified being a Pet Shop Boys fan because of the amazing output that we've had from them over the years and to hear that there are others with the same passion for their music is great. It shows how amazing PSB's songs are that when Chris and Graham were picking their favourites from Smash, I disagreed with them on many of their choices and couldn't pick even between many of them!
I've bought a T-Shirt (which are all great designs, by the way), so I hope it helps to keep the podcasts going.

Hey, thanks for the note, really glad you’ve enjoyed them, and thank you very much for the T shirt purchase too, that’s fantastic. More episodes to come - watch this space! Image

Hi everyone,

Just a note to let you know that the first of six brand new In Depth Pet Shop Boys podcasts will be going live next Friday. - the first episode will be out a week today, marking the exciting 30th anniversary reissue of Relentless. It had to be done!

You can listen to our Season 2 trailer here:

Apple Podcasts: http://tiny.cc/lm9cvz
Spotify: http://tiny.cc/om9cvz

We’ve learned loads since the two of us first met back in February and launched In Depth in May. As complete podcast novices, we’ve been bowled over by the feedback from Pet Shop Boys’ fans all over the world - we’ve listeners in over 70 countries, and in June we even hit number one on the Apple Podcast music chart. Of course this was helped in no small part by a mention on the official PSB social channels, which was a thrill in itself.

On the back of our sixth episode we tentatively launched a small fundraiser and online T-shirt store - the proceeds of which meant we were able to buy a small mixer and a couple of microphones, and also cover our hosting costs. We were extremely humbled by these contributions - it meant a great deal and we’re extremely grateful.

So now we’re no longer tied to recording at the University of Huddersfield, and indeed we’ve discovered that Chris’s garden shed has ideal acoustics, so that’s where we’ve set about recording these new episodes.

We’ve tried to up our game on all aspects of content and production and really hope that you like the results. It’s been a lot of fun. But the core aim has stayed the same - to celebrate 40 years of Pet Shop Boys, by going In Depth on all aspects of their career. So expect more PSB chat, facts, memories, theories, and more ridiculous quizzes. Your feedback, as ever, will be greatly appreciated.

You can listen to our Season 1 podcasts here or you can subscribe so you never miss an episode.
