Volume (Catalogue Update)

I couldn't sleep the other night so I decided to flick through Catalogue again. It's a mammoth achievement and I wondered how on earth they could expand on its already impressive 336 pages without it being impracticable not to say dangerous. It covers twenty years and it's likely the expanded edition will cover a further 18-20 years when released. That's a further seven studio albums plus a Disco, ballet, compilations, a raft of singles, EPs, dvds, books, several tours, Annuallys and more besides. How on earth can it be expanded in a way that is sensible and affordable? Surely it would make far more sense to just carry on with a volume 2 from 2006 to avoid repetition, fan alienation and a hefty price tag. Or are they hoping to appeal to a wider audience by starting from the beginning? Perhaps it'll be reformatted and reset in a larger size and/or with smaller images to keep the price down whilst remaining comprehensive..

Any ideas?

Farrow need to design this new version.

The previous design was weak - especially considering (aside from Scott King/Visionaire) it’s essentially all created (along with Neil & Chris) by the third Pet Shop Boy.

But I remember, it's the book with pictures.
But what is it exactly? Images of every album cover?
I'd more hasten to question whether such a release is needed in the internet age.

Catalogue is a beautiful book which fairly comprehensively sets out all of their visuals, including album and single packaging, video visuals, concert stage sets etc, in chronological order. The images are beautifully reproduced and are accompanied by new commentary by Philip Hoare, the PSBs themselves and Mark Farrow. It's what we might call a 'coffee table book'.

As it was published in 2007, there is plenty more for a second volume, or perhaps an expanded (doubled?) volume. I expect the product would be high-end, probably quite expensive.

As for the 'internet age'... people still like to have nicely presented printed art books when all the paintings are on Google Images. A lovely book and looking up a picture online are two different things.

As well as updating their 2006 artwork book Catalogue next year and planning a musical based around a Hans Christian Andersen story (a different tale to their 2011 Andersen ballet The Most Incredible Thing), Neil and Chris began recording a new album in March. It’s being made with Depeche Mode producer James Ford.

My Catalogue is autographed by Neil and Chris since they did a special signing at midnight immediately following the Fundamental Tour show in NYC at Tower Records!

I bought the german version of Catalogue by mistake a few years ago. I then assumed there were only english copies of this. I was wrong.
I'm looking forward to purchasing the new expanded edition which, this time, will allow me to have something to read that I can unserstand along with all the visuals...

Catalogue is probably my favorite PSB item. It's beautiful, comprehensive and interesting.

A expanded edition would become too heavy and uncomfortable. Unless in the revised version they reduce the diversity of materials (maybe sticking to cover artworks and videos), thus lowering the amount of pages needed despite covering 20 more years.

I think a separate second volume would be more reasonable. And a box set of volume 1&2 in case someone needs both.

Well since I’ve never been able to get my hands on it, I certainly hope the reissue is the same as the original. Understanding that it was quite the behemoth, it would completely make sense if it ends up as 2 volumes in a box set.
