Very album pics (in particular Chris' head)

I just bought the remastered vinyl of Very (let's not get into why the heck I haven't had that in my collection for 30 years ) but was struck - as I was when I spotted it the first time on yhe CD inlay - by the little faces of Neil and Chris dotted across the sleeve, and how one in particular, of Chris, is different to all the others (he's kind of looking down).

Clearly that was a very specific design choice, and I am wondering if there was a reason or story behind that.

I think it's kind of neat but still a bit unusual.

Also maybe I'm mistaken but I could have sworn there was one little photo of Neil that was different too, but I cant see it on this cover.

Yes, there is a photo of Neil's head that is slightly different although I can't remember which format(s) it is on & don't have them instantly to hand. Pretty sure he has a slightly wry smile compared to all the other standard heads of him.

Very was the very first Pet Shop Boys LP I ever bought. While listening to the music, teenage me spent hours looking at the cover and the inner sleeve (and cursing the lack of lyrics, I wasn’t remotely fluent in English back then -not that I'm now!-). When I noticed the odd heads, the tilted Chris and the more serious Neil, I felt that I had discovered a secret, that I had been granted access to a private club I've belonged to ever since. It took me a few years to discover the CD versión and find out about Postscript, which only added more magic to the whole era. Thanks for bringing back those memories!

Indeed there's one different photo of Neil and Chris each. Not only on the sleeve of the LP, but also the CD and even the sheet music book. The reissue of the LP doesn't have the alternate photo's, which I find a little annoying.

Is this the first and only time they "hid" things on an album? It was a sign of the times with "hidden" tracks and other stuff on the cover or the actual physical disc.

I only found out about the hidden track after buying the further listening release of Very and it was mentioned. I always wondered why Go West had a time track of about 12 minutes when the song was only 4 or 5.

It was quite annoying back in the day as I’d be wanting to stick “Go West” on the jukebox in my local pub but never did after I realised there would be 4 or 5 mins of silence before the next track..!

I think you’d have been OK. It probably would have been the single version on the jukebox.

You're right. I looked at some images on Discogs of the Very/Relentless release and Neil has a slightly different heads shot to the right on the Very (orange) card sleeve and Chris' one is on the Relentless (pink) sleeve.

In "Very" there are 2 little pics of N and C a little different, it's a sort of "easter egg".
I already noticed years ago in the "inlay" of the priginal CD.
