Indubitably of their finest songs (on some days, their best), as shown by it still sounding great whether covered by Carter USM, Liza or karaoke style in Saltburn. I assume it started life as one of the sleaze tracks they mention in the Imagine documentary but the slower tempo of the Actually version allows the contradictory emotions of the protagonist to be expressed with more time and space - notably shown in Saltburn as the character has an epiphany in real time.

They had some great remixer names at the start of their career ! Shep Pettibone, Francois Kervokian, Julian Mendelsohn, Arthur Barker.telys wrote: Wed 17 Apr 2024, 8:21 pmI got the CD-maxi at a later stage, I already had Rent on Actually and Discography (but I got them before Alternative so it must've been 93/94) so it was nice to get the mixes, which are really good.leesmapman wrote: Wed 17 Apr 2024, 6:31 pm It's also one of the best extended mixes of PSB tracks. The CD single is a great collection of tracks, with the extended mix, dub and the "I want a dog" b-side. First CD single I bought of PSB, I just remember. I got It's a sin and What have I done... on tape from a classmate.
Kevorkian is an armenian surnamn btw.
It just made it even more magical for me !

Rent is fine. Never one of my favorites nor a highlight in their discography (IMO). x

Sadly here in the US, EMI America refused to release the song as a single because their marketing department thought it was about a (gay) male prostitute and they were afraid the record buying public would never buy a PSB single or album again.Patrick Bateman wrote: Wed 17 Apr 2024, 9:03 pm Indubitably of their finest songs (on some days, their best), as shown by it still sounding great whether covered by Carter USM, Liza or karaoke style in Saltburn. I’m criss-crossing threads here but Rent was an instant classic for me.
I almost wore my copy of Actually out with the amount of times I would rewind and play it. The audio quality was absolutely terrible on the little tape player I had but that didn’t take anything away from me loving this song.
Deceptively simple but all the more impressive because of that - no distractions, just pure heartfelt beauty. I still think it’s one of the best songs of all time.
Agreed with previous comments about the extended remixes - esp the Francois Kervorkian remixes.

A perfect pop song about love and compromise.
Aside from Bobby O demo there is also XFM version from 2003 which reveals the original Hi-NRG nature of this song - check it out.

Greetings,
It's nice to have a song that's been performed by my 2 favourite artists. If you've not heard Carter USM's cover, as name-checked in the liner notes of Discography, take a listen... but don't expect it to sound similar!
Retro.

And we shouldn't forget about Haçienda 1992. That version had the highest energy for me.spacewalker wrote: Wed 17 Apr 2024, 11:17 pm A perfect pop song about love and compromise.

That version gives us a glimpse of how the Bobby O 1984 album would've sounded like.spacewalker wrote: Wed 17 Apr 2024, 11:17 pm A perfect pop song about love and compromise.

A little bit, maybe with a bit more drum kicks, orchestral stabs and JJ Belle on guitar. You can hear it here from 05:30 to 08:32:Tom Angel wrote: Thu 18 Apr 2024, 6:01 pmNever heard that version .
