Re: New BBC 'imagine...' documentary on Pet Shop Boys confirmed for Spring 2024
this is one of the best documentaries on them, that i've seen.
i think every fan should watch it.
i like the interaction between them, and all the details, facts, and jokes.
---
very well done.
thanks to all those that are sharing it with the fans here in the US.
i've converted it to a smaller MP4 if anyone needs a link.

Tom Hibbert 101 - say nothing until absolutely necessary and let the artist reveal more about themselves to fill the silence as a consequence. Smash Hits technique from Neil's time there, so he'd understand completely. And so much better than interviewers constantly interrupting the flow with inane questions they've heard 1000 times before.Parkol wrote: Sat 20 Apr 2024, 7:43 am I didn't understand the role of the man in the glasses. Like he's a famous journalist in England or something? First of all, he's very old, he hardly knows anything about music, design, electronic music, etc.
It looked ridiculous, he sat there and asked hardly any questions. What was the point of calling him for an interview?
He looked like he was called to interview people he knew nothing about, but there was nowhere to go - they were paying him money.
I can't understand the point of him being in the movie.
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

Adding to this, Yentob was previously Controller of both BBC1 and BBC2. He's about as far from "some guy" as it's possible to get in terms of UK media. It's a huge coup having him behind this documentary and as Harry points out, probably the reason PSB agreed to do it in the first place. He let them speak for themselves without making it about him, which is what a good interviewer should be doing.Harry wrote: Sat 20 Apr 2024, 11:37 am‘imagine…’ is Alan Yentob’s show. This film is part his series on the BBC. They didn’t “bring him in”, rather he brought them in. He has been making high-profile arts documentaries for the BBC for decades. He is particularly famous for the film about David Bowie called ‘Cracked Actor’.
His interviewing style is to let his subjects speak, and not to show a lot of his conversation with them. The film being by Alan Yentob is probably a large part of why the Pets agreed to do it. He is a prestige documentary-maker.
Given his career, including being the BBC’s Head of Music and Arts, I imagine he knows a huge amount about music, art, design and culture in general.

Amazing to hear part of an early song none of us have heard or heard of...
"What's That?"
1:03:30 or so.

Isn’t that the one he’s talking about right after the track plays….Neil calls it Sleaze. I recall they had a unreleased track called
Nu sleaze Which I thought was written for closer to heaven, but I’m not sure, I’m also not sure they are even the same track

Watching this again tonight - the ending reminds me what a f***ing great track ‘Decide’ is.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning.
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Started watching this on the commute but always get emotional and tear up when Neil starts reading lyrics (did any one else get teary watching this doc?!) I worry people on the train will start to ask me if I’m alright
I love the boys are really given breathing space to talk. I’m a big fan of the imagine series with Alan Yentob and for me I really like his approach to interviewing. Looking forward to sitting down later where I can finally get through it all and sob in the comfort of my own home. I think the boys landing in my life like a bomb at a pivotal time of my own, their music will always affect my emotions.
Have also realised I have a serious crush on Chris, which feels particularly complicated…

If you look at the tracklist on the tape he holds up it shows the title, just before It's a Sin (second version)glennjridge wrote: Sun 21 Apr 2024, 1:21 am Isn’t that the one he’s talking about right after the track plays….Neil calls it Sleaze. I recall they had a unreleased track called

A very cool moment is shown where the New London Boy is talked about. More such moments, where the work in the studio, with synthesizers, all kinds of plug-ins and work with arrangement is shown.

Saw it last night. Thanks to the community who send me the download link. You guys are the best.
What a nice docu this is.
My favourite parts :
Neil reading the lyrics.

There isn't too much to tell. They shared a villa, and Chris had a boyfriend (or, at the very least, a 'love interest') with him. He (Chris) was very friendly, although my friend at the time was concerned about how much coke he was taking - cigarette sized lines at 9am. But then again, it is Ibiza.Harry wrote: Fri 19 Apr 2024, 11:54 amI would love to hear more about this!jamie1978 wrote: Fri 19 Apr 2024, 10:55 amA friend of mine holidayed with Chris in Ibiza in the late 90's. A small voice of calm and reason.
